Thumping when going over speedbumps or potholes ?

Featured Replies

Hi there, new to the forum today but ive been a Octavia Scout owner since June last year, prior to that I taxi`d a 53 plate Octavia 1.9 SDI.

Anyway, since I bought Scout I noticed that when going over speedbumps (approx 10mph if that) and potholes (if I couldnt avoid them) a loud thump from the front end, and even at times when I changed gear through the clutch. Ive had the car to a local trusted garage recently to investigate the problem and they found nothing at fault, they checked anti-roll bar, suspension bushes, but nothing, only thing they did highlight was that the rear bushes are persished.

Is this a common problem ? Is it something I just need to live with ?

Apologies if this has already been covered in previous topics but any feedback / advice would be appreciated.

I absolutely love the car, and the recent snow we had in Newcastle in Jan the car never missed a beat, I even found myself driving on untreated and undriven roads (up to 7" snow) to "test" the 4x4 , it just kept on going !

Thanks in advance people.

I get a knocking sound from the front left hand side when going over the many speed humps where I live, put it into a garage a few weeks back and they could'nt find a fault either....

Its very strange, if it is what is then ok ill live with it , was wondering if anyone else had experienced this as well, obviously so !

Thanks for the reply..

Loose engine tray? Does it happen when driving on a dual carriageway or motorway when doing more than say 50?

Oh right ok, ill have a look when my girlfriend returns with it, no , no noises when 50 or above, just over speed bumps or potholes.

Thanks for the reply

Could be anti-roll bar rattling around due to faulty bushes.

Anti roll bar was checked but all seemed well, rear bushes are slightly perished , but that couldn't explain front thumping ?

Im baffled at the moment,

Thanks for the reply

I wouldnt think so. I would be looking at all the bolts to see if they are all tightened up properly around the front on the car.

loose break caliper? or worn Ball joint?

The console bushes (rear of wishbone) do have a hell of a lot of movement as standard it cold be the bush banging on its stops as its voided so will move and then suddenly hit the stop, like when going over bumps etc. eurocarparts do some replacements or there any a few different versions available too

I get this too but had all the front bushes/mounts checked at Skoda dealer a couple of times but they found nothing.

Thanks TrevorB33 for the information :)

Yes, cheers for the info guys, gives me a few other things to go on when I take it back to the garage, much appreciated

This time of year on cold mornings (under 5 C), over the 5 speed humps out of my housing estate I get the same noise.

Seems to be the suspension strut bushes when cold make a noise, on the return journey back after being driven for an hour or more they are a lot quieter..if noticeable at all.

93K on this car.

Same happened to A3 had with similar mileage and got em changed. This is the third car to get this problem....darn speed humps.

I bet its the steering rack.

We have had this in both of our Scouts - only really when going over speedbumps and potholes, rather than on the move. We did have a sheared bolt on the underneath protection which then rattled on our first Scout, which was fixed under warranty, but that was all. I have read reviews which mention this thumping is a feature of the Scout, so you're not alone.

Let us know if they find anything..:-))

Prophet of doom :-)

lol its a Skoda ;)

If you go a bit slower do you still get it? I found that the 'tighter' suspension on the Scout, to counteract the body roll of being a bit taller, could provide a thump if going over speed humps at a modest pace. The only way I can describe it is as if the front springs are firing the nose back into the air whilst the rest of the suspension/car is still finishing a dive, hence the thump as the dive is abruptly stopped.

FYI most the ARB type bits are rattles rather than thumps. I should know, after 120k miles around the potholed disaster of South Lanarkshire rural roads and 5 years ownership I've done all the drop links (front and back) front wishbone bushes and rear tie bars all within the last 6 months (and maybe a CV joint but I'll find out about that later today.....).
