Is my car a write off

Featured Replies

Was clipped by a lorry yesterday, luckily no one hurt and drivers admitted responsibility. This look bound for the scrappy?

Oh it's an 08 vrs estate

It is certainly repairable, but on a 5 year old car it will be touch and go whether it will be financially viable as it will take a few weeks to be repaired so there will be the added cost of a hire car to add to the repair cost.

A lot depends on a lot in your case.

Chassis intact/undamaged then repair possible I would have thought.

Age & value of vehicle versus cost of repair another thought.

Outer body panels/ trim and spraying fairly straight forward stuff, it's the damage underneath (if any) will have an overall outcome.

Good luck with repair as opposed to the hassle of an insurance pay-out and shortfall to get another vehicle.

I would say that looks like a write off mate, but Im no expert, just the damage is across multiple panels, bumper and looks like it may be twisted

Yup agree with others. It a close one. If its touched any of the inside structure imo it will be a write off. If its just the other panels then you will probably just about get it repaired although I am sure it will still be a bill of 3/4/5K which is very close to the write off figure - whats the car worth 8k? Once its around half that its often write off time

Looking about I'd say the car's worth 8-9k

Oh that's nasty. If it does go right off rob it of some parts and flog them lol. I happen to need a new ac compressor :)

Sometimes it's better to be a right off a car is never the same after being bashed. And the resale is difficult too if its recordable damage.

Itll be touch and go I reckon, totally depends on the insurer.

Think its fair to say that the damage looks significant enough not to just cosmetic; if it needs jigging etc the costs will pile on then yes it will probably be RIP.

I had an incident a while ago of a car that should have been written off but got repaired so you never know what they'll choose to do.....July 08 VW Polo 1.4 Match, severe rear impact in August 08, written off by OPs insurance company but took forever to process claim, went with our insurers and they chose to repair it. Car repaired so badly 1st time round that it had to go back, didnt get the car back for about 9 months. Was never the same, 12k car, repair costa inc hire cars was about 18k......hope someone lost their job as a result!

Worth noting though that if car is chosen to be repaired by insurer and it is done as a fully insurance approved job there will be no record of the incident on the cars history and will not affect resale. We traded our car in once 3 years old and not a single problem

The damage looks fairly deep where it was hit, so there's a good it's more than just panel damage.

Have a good look round at the panel gaps all over the car and see if they are all still straight or not. If it's bent out of shape and needs to be put on a jig then on a car of that age it's quite likely to be written off.

That might be for the best, if you can get a decent valuation for it, as heavily repaired cars often are never quite right.

I fthat was my car, i wouldnt want it back. I would hope it was a write off.

My wife had an accident in Dec 2011 with Her ford focus and even though it was 8 years old and was smashed at the front, the insurance company still fixed the car and the repair bill was only a few hundred pounds less that what we sold the car for and it was only worth £1800.

When they came and uplifted the car on the low loader, I spoke to the guy who picks up all the cars for repair and I commented to him about the damage to the focus and they probably wont repair the car and he said you would not believe the cars they are fixing now, some look like a truck had ran over them, so it seems that even though it looks bad, some insurance companies are willing to repair cars even if they are only saving a few hundred pounds or so.

I remember when a girl ran into the back of our old fiesta at a traffic light many years ago and the insurance company fixed the car but it was never the same and we had a few water leaks in the car from the front and in the boot we could not get fixed properly, so we sold the car on and bought a new one.

Either way, I hope you get a quick resolution.

I have a mate who had a classic Land Rover written off, it was immaculate, he was offered £900, instead of taking the offer he asked for the vehicle to be replaced, same age, same condition etc, it took a while but he ended up with a very tidy LR and it cost the insurance a lot more money.

I don't agree with ed209, the damage looks like panel damage only and when repaired will be fine and not dangerous.

I didnt say it would be dangerous. I just dont think it will be the same with regards to fit/finish/squeaks/rattles.

It's amazing watching one of them body shop jigs pull panels straight again, you see the panel before and think that's a new panel job. 20mins later hey presto, one straight panel.

I think insurance companys are cutting all the corners now even when vehicles go to main dealeres with regard to cheap parts. I would want to see that all genuine parts had been used before i signed for the car and i would go over it with a fine tooth comb,if its done properly it should be as good as new.

Cheers for the replies, pretty sure it's more than just panel damage as the rear pillar's been damaged

i had an incedent too last year when my octavia was reversed into a wall, damage at the back of the car is more easy to repair as there as not as much critical components, so when my octavia came out the body shop it looked and drove like nothing had happend, but my brother had a 06 plate silver octavia 1.9 tdi classic shape and it was reversed into by a 44 tonner when it was parked outside his house, he was in bed and his alarm was going off so he ran down stairs and it was lying right up on the kerb and the offside front bumper, bonnet, wing, door, wheel was crippled, he phoned me and i went down and the car was a mess really awfull and we thought it was a goner, the driver came back and took responsibility and he didn't have a co driver to help him back out of the bay, but amazingly his Octavia got fixed and looked good, but it ate brakepads and wheels like nothing else after the bash, he got rid of it and replaced it with a new superb and he always parks in his drive now. here is a pic of my accident :peek:

and here is it after the body shop done their magic on it

 poor Octavia, that does look nasty, hope you're not sore after the impact. Also hope that the third party's insurance don't play hard ball especially as their driver initially admitted liability.

If it was my car I'd hope for it to be written off, damage like that is just asking for a problematic repair.

Good luck with it.

Ah sure, it'll polish out.

Glad nobody was hurt. Hope you have a pain free resolution

Sorry to see the poor thing hit, looks mint too so shiny. Race Blue the only colour that also looks good in a crash!

I am not far from you, was it local?

Has the rear wheel absorbed any of the impact?
