Tyres Again! - Continental Sport 2 Vs. Continental Sport 5

Featured Replies

After nearly 19K it looks like I am going to have to bite the bullet and splash out on some new front tyres for my petrol vRS. It's currently got Continental Conti Sport Contact 2 and I have been more than happy with their grip and longevity. However I see there are also Conti Sport Contact 5 that are allegedly slightly better in the fuel efficiency stakes whilst still offering the same wet weather grip as the Contact 2. Does anyone have any experience of the Conti Sport Contact 5 and how they compare to the Conti Sport Contact 2?

The Conti Sport Contact 5 appear to be slightly cheaper (in the case of Camskill £9 cheaper than the equivalent Contact 2).

Cheers.

i got rid of the contis on my vrs found them to be ok but nothing great. currently running Goodyear Eagle F1 assymetric 2 all round and much prefer them over the Contis. Much better Grip not too fussed about wear. 19 K Miles out a set of Fronts the most i have ever had out a set of front on my petrol Vrs's is 9000-9500 miles my brother only managed 11000 on his both our current vrs's had contis

I found the Sport Contact 2 tyres to be good in the wet but thats about it. I certianly wouldnt buy them again.

FWIW the Focus RS comes with the Sport Contact 5 fitted as standard, as does the Meganne RS250. The SC5 is Continentals top ultra performance road tyre so if its cheaper than the SC2 then IMO its a no brainer.

must admit just swapped conti's 2 and 3 for eagle f1 2's all round, no contest, seems amazing tyre and quieter too. grip so much better. No idea of life span as only just fitted

I am under the understanding that the 2 is being phased out and replaced with the 3 and the 5.

Having double-checked it looks like the Goodyears offer better wet weather grip than the Continentals (Wet Grip A as opposed to Wet Grip B for either Conti 2 or Conti 5). The difference in price is negligible.

Looks like I may need to expand my choice...

check out auto express tyre 2011 reviews, goodyear came top, seems that civic type r's, clio cup forums aswell as vrs owners all rate them, camskill very good prices too

I must admit it surprised me how good it is.

I was going to ask if I'm looking at the correct Goodyear tyres as they look a bit cheaper than the Michelin Pilot Sports 3 which seem decent value for money. At least on Blackcircles anyway, i really need to get my front tyres replaced but I don't know any of the garages Blackcircles use here so not sure who best to trust.

what price u been quoted.. ?

I think around £105 fully fitted each for my 17in wheels which I thought seemed pretty cheap for tyres that seem to be generally well rated, the Pilot Sport 3's were around £110 to £115 although admittedly I haven't found a suitable garage for fitting them.

18" cost me £ 125 per corner so think about right, ps3 were around £ 150 per corner but goodyear seemed to out perform them anyway, and think they well worth it and no I don't work for goodyear lol

Unless you are able to test two identical cars side-by-side with different tyres, then you can never truly compare the tyres relative performance and merits. A worn out set of tyres will always be noiser, less grippy and be poor at clearing water. I have no problem with with CSC2, 3 and 5 and have used them all. In my experience they wear very well and perform broadly in line with the other top brands. Personally I will be sticking with Conti for the foreseeable future.

I also rate the CS2's very highly and have used just about every high end tyre out there and I always come back to the conti's. People must be seriously pushing their cars to say they lack dry grip as I've done the ring, Cadwell, Olton park and a few others on the conti's as well as brisk road driving and I have never had a problem.

Eagle F1's are pretty good as are the Ultrac sesanta's but I've found they wear down a bit quicker.

I have been able to test out 2 identical cars side by side as my brother also has a Tsi Vrs with DSG the Eagle F1's have more grip in the wet and dry compared to the continentals. The continentals are a good tyre but I prefer the Goodyears for the reasons I gave.

I use conti contact 5's and they are excellent. Recently took them around Oulton park and for a road tyre they were faultless. Wet grip is excellent and no under steer at all. I do have a LSD which helps these matters though.

It's going to be a toss up between the Goodyear F1 and the Conti Sport Contact 5.

Halfords Autocentres are doing Goodyears for £126.02 fitted as opposed to BlackCircles £190.92! The Conti Sport Contact 5 are £126.68 at Halfords whereas BlackCircles are £121.33. Not sure why there is such a price disparity for the Goodyears!

I could buy the tyres from Camskill but then I need to find someone to fit them which is not always easy.

Decisions, decisions!

just picked spare kit up and now got conti sport 2 as spare, goodyears still impressing and mpg improved although that could be the weather.. if price same it goodyear all the way for me

19k and ur tyres already need replacing?!??!?!

i'm on 50k with the factory CS2, and i've probably got another 2-4k left i reckon.

when the time comes, i plan on replacing them with the CS5.

The miles you get from your tyres depends on the type of road you drive on.

My friend and I bought our CR Vrs last May. We both have an annual mileage of around 25k but he drives on A roads around North Yorkshire while my mileage is mainly on the M2.

My tyres are the originals on 23K miles and he is on his second set of fronts. Both have CS 2 at moment.

I really can't recommend the Continental tyres enough.

My car came with SC2's from the factory when I bought it. At around 30k miles I decided that the fronts were getting a little too close to the wear markers so decided to replace - purchased SC5's.

I moved my original rear SC2's to the front and they are now on 33.5k miles. At the current rate of wear I'd say I'm looking at around 40k miles on these before they need replacing - at which point two more new SC5's will go on the rear and my existing SC5's will move to the front.

The Continental's are quiet and I've never felt they were going to let me down in wet or dry conditions. I've thrown it around corners I wouldn't have dreamed doing before I built up confidence in my tyres.

If the EU ratings matter to you (although plenty of evidence to say they don't mean much) the SC5's are A rated for wet. Lower rating on fuel economy - but none of the "best" tyres rate highly here.

I did quite like the Conti 2's (came with them from the factory), then I went to Uniroyal Rainsport 2's and preferred them for both wet/dry grip and handling, but now I am on a new set of Avon ZZ3's since swapping out my winters (Dunlop wintersport 4D's that have been fantastic).

The Avons were £110 each (18") from National inc fitting, balance plus I got them to throw in a free alignment too so something of a bargain against the price of Conti's as I saved a couple of hundred quid. Can't comment for longevity yet of course, but grip and handling are the best I have experienced, plus they seem to be extremely quiet, so they get a big  from me!

I don't abuse my car and based on earlier posts I have done well to get 19K miles out of them. I don't know what the roads are like in Oz but I can only assume you don't have many bends and you must be doing most of your driving on motorways... Here in beautiful Scotland we have some of the best and twistiest roads known to man and I am assuming some of the most abrasive road surfaces known to man!

Maybe we should have a new thread to see who has got the most mileage out of their original tyres...
