Coil Recall

Featured Replies

Guys,

I got a letter on Saturday from VAG. They are "accellerating" the campaign to replace the coil packs...whether they need it or not.

According to the letter you makes your appointment and wait about an hour for the exchange of the coils.

Not too bad of a deal, I think.

(Note: This is in the former colony...)

Cheers!

I wonder if the same thing is going to happen in europe, or if its just vag america leading the way

Which version are they going to fit, bearing in mind that the H was superceded by the J and then the L (since July in the UK), with yet a different version now fitted to cars coming off the production line?

Sorry...I don't know what model coil pack will be installed. I'll try to get the information when I take Ziggy in for the do.

Ok, Coil packs installed last Friday. Sorry, could not get the number from the coil itself but I do have the part number if someone wants it. Wrenches couldn't understand what I was talking about....

Also, had (or attempted to have) the heated outside mirrors replaced as they had burned out last winter. Well, that job was half done as they only had the driver's side replacement and they had to order the passenger side. This means another trip to the VW store.

About 30 miles after the coils were replaced the CEL came on and stayed on. I drove the car thinking that I'd complain about that little gem of a suprise when I took it back to the dealer for the mirror that wasn't installed. The next day I popped the "hood" (bonnet to ya'll!!!) and pulled the engine cover. I was thinking the problem might be a loose connection. Well DUHHHHHHH! The same guy who didn't know about the coil number left a vacuum line off the manifold!!!!!!!! Plugged it back in, restarted but the light stayed on.

Needed gas yesterday and zoomed into the Shell station on the way home. Grabbed the cap and had it not been attached to the car I'd have flipped it 50 feet. It wasn't tight on the spout. After re-gassing, I tightened it the usual 5 or so clicks. Fired up and off went the CEL!!! Go figure!!!

Do the wrenches need to loosen the gas cap when re-doing the coils? I think not. Could the vacuum line problem have loosened the cap?? I think not. Anyone know if they have to tinker with the gas cap when fixing the coils?? Why would the gas cap suddenly go loose as a goose?

;)

Re: Are VAG going to pull their finger out over coil packs in Europe? I wouldn't hold your breath. Don't forget that it was the stink kicked up by US VW owners that finally got VAG moving when it came to the coil pack issue but even when coil packs were being replaced in the US we were still being told it was just a bit of bad luck and no real problem existed. Basically the consumer protection laws are stronger over there than here. ie the lemon laws.

Welcome back Silber_Igel, nice to here from you again. Re: the 'wrenches', maybe they just liked driving your motor but thought they ought to put some fuel back in before you got it back! It does happen.

Please post the part number and we may be able to work out which coil pack version it is.

Just thought I'd let you all know that one went on mine this morning. Car has done 18k miles and I've had it a year.

The local dealer was most helpful and had stock - but from a "new" supplier, although I didn't get a look at it for details.
