Rear Wheel smells warm rubber

Featured Replies

hi

Anyone have a clue whats up with my octavia 04 estate .

The rear wheel on passengers side smells very rubber the rim or tyre itself is not hot .

Ive tryed to tighten bolts and adjust tyre pressure but still the same.

Car has run 115 000 km

tyre size 225/45/17

changed brakes 4 months ago

i've got the same issue as well (the same wheel, even though i've got RHD car). After smelling rubber for a few months (was blaming tyres and spirited driving), caliper seized. It happened on a long trip and had no options but to carry on driving so caliper is now FUBAR'd.

Replacement caliper is on the way, hope this will sort the smelly wheel issue :)

Are you sure its not a sticky break pad - after driving try putting the palm on your hand close (but don't touch) to the disk and see if its hot. Alternatively (when cold) compare the disks on either side and see is there is a different wear patten (feel the inside of the disk as well as the outside).

Might also be tracking is one part of the tyre hot or more worn,

It will do. Chances are the other is not far behind. Just replaced both on mine and new disks/pads.

Oh, get the handbrake return springs too.

still hope other one will be fine with some servicing (so far had no issues with it), good call on handbrake return springs.

If this is addressed to me, then thats not the case - had the caliper out and tried to screw the cylinder back in - did not move at all.

As for tracking, i may be wrong, but if tracking is messed up, should wear be visible on both rear tyres?

Edit: After a longer drive it is worth having a quick look at the disks. If you are seeing any blue-ish areas on the disk, then it is overheating. If it is overheating you will feel it even while standing 2-3 feet away :)

I had this. Rear nearside caliper dragged badly. Totally kills your fuel economy! Pads overheated and eventually broke up and disc got eaten.

New caliper fixed mine.

mine does this but has had all new brakes?

All new calipers?

yup, discs not hot to touch either so really doubt they are dragging
