Monsters poorly; might need to call to Skoda Assist!

Featured Replies

Poor Monster won't start, think she may have the dead battery syndrome one or to others have suffered from in the past. Problem is she's round the back of the house and not easy to move or accessible to jump start from the Monte, so it might be a first for me anyway and make a call to the 'cavalry' in the morning if the status quo remains as now :S

Have noticed thinking in hindsight, that she has been a bit lethargic of late when coming to start and I do recall the glow plug light staying on for a short while after a start last week :wonder:

Will see what the morning brings,

Why not whip the battery off the Monte and get the monster started. Then work from there

Not good to hear Tim hope you get it sorted in the morning, the battery should last longer than 2 years :wonder: . The only battery that I have replaced is the one in the van and that was 7 years old, all my cars have gone with the original battery most about 5 years old.

Good luck in the morning and hope the yeti is up and running again soon.

Oh dear.

Mine was a relay sticking. Plus the cr*p batteries Skoda use.

My battery will go flat if I leave the video cameras on, which was the cause of my flat batteries a year ago. Been fine ever since I realised it was the cameras.

In the cold it is a lot more lethargic to start.

Not noticed the glow plug light issue though.

Sent using whatever device I'm using at the time.

Thought about taking out the Monte battery but it's only a very baby one and knowing my luck I'll end up having them both out of action :giggle:

The relay issue also crossed my mind along with the glow plug light, hence wondering if its best anyway to get the Assist people involved, just in case there's more to it than meets the eye :wonder:

Skoda refused to replace mine under warranty. They just cleaned up the contacts.

They told me that they would have to run tests to see if there was a manufacturing fault...............Of course I knew what there answer would be.

Varta batteries are good.....

Strange thing Looby it's a Varta battery that's currently fitted, just a shame that the factory fitted ones don't appear to carry the same level of warranty as the after-market ones :wonder:

Currently waiting for a Skoda assist person to turn up, appears their either busy, I'm rather remote or a low priority, as I rang them at 5.45 and their currently estimating an 8am arrival but at least I got a update phone call :wonder:

Just glad I'm not on the side of the road in a isolated location on a stormy night :rain:

My recurrent (2010) CR170 dead battery was not fixed until the starter motor was replaced. Apparently the faulty starter was drawing a large excess current which inevitably was doing in the battery. That was a couple of months back and so far so good. since then.

Well the nice man from the RAC turned up from Hull at just after 7:45, so 2 hours from the call. Initially checked the battery voltage which was reading about 11.5v; not far off what is should be, then connected up a battery jump starter and she fired up straight away. He left it running a while and then carried out some tests for charging, leakage that sort of thing and found no fault; both car and battery healthy :wonder:

No obvious reason the battery had drained a little but it goes to show that little is all it needs to prevent her from starting. Advised me to monitor and obviously if it happens again a dealer visit will be required, however she's very close to a 30k service anyway.

Oh one thing I did notice the battery fitted from factory is a 61Ah but all the replacement on-line retailers quote a minimum of 70Ah :wonder:

Anyway thanks to all for your input, if she does it again I'll let you know.

When the chap from Skoda assit came out to see mine, He told me anything under 12V was dead.

Fully charged should read 12.6V

11.5v is basically dead; there's your problem.

^ agreed.

Well I hope that troublesome 1 volt doesn't go 'walkabout' again :giggle:

Perhaps the more learned members on the forum could tell me if this premature failure of batteries is restricted to diesels. Is it that petrol engines don't 'pull' so much energy from the battery when starting? I leave my video camera on most times and it doesn't seem to drain the battery.

Mine (Diesel 170) went flat when I left it for two months. Something was draining it very slowly. I now plug in a cheap solar battery charger http://www.maplin.co.uk/solar-powered-12v-1.5w-battery-trickle-charger-98358 which keeps it topped up summer and winter. Left in for a month at the airport in November and it started first time.

I bought a cheap (~£4) voltage plug on ebay, it pushes into the cigar lighter to check the voltage.

I've got one exactly the same!!

Very useful, too.
