Anyone used Valvoline VR1 20w50

Featured Replies

As above.

Been running it for the last week and so far so good. Had an issue with the odd bit of smoke so put this in as its nice and thick. Seems to have done he trick and car is running sweet.

Yes, back in the 1970s, when tolerances were so high that you could get about 15% more power by taking several hundred sets of pistons, conrods bearings and valves and selecting matched sets for individual crankshafts and blocks. 20W/50 is way too thick an oil for a 1.8T.

not the best idea - the engine is designed to run on 5w30 or 10w40

this stuff is way out of spec - personally i wouldn't do it

I use it in my 2.8i Capri, it's good in that old engine. As has been said though, sounds abit thick for a modern engine

Take it out.

Youll be doing so much more damage when you start it up.

Its great if you live somewhere like the carribean

Why was this used?

probably the worst oil choice ive seen.

way too thick when both cold and warm.

use either a 5w40 or a 5w30

I bet oil pump loves trying to pump that round,

Agree with everything said above, get it out and get some decent 5w30 in it before turbo lets go

The smole is telling you something is wrong. And putting this in will make it worse.

Pop a pic of your car on.

It says in the manual that for a car on a standard service interval, which mine is, to use SAE 5W/40 to 20W/50. Spoke to audi after its MOT and told them about the smoke and was told to put the thickest oil recommended for the car as its getting on and has done a lot of miles. I should just change it more often.

you really dont want to run that grade on a 1.8t in our climate. the manual should have a sliding scale of ambient temps against the recommended grade

this will end in tears if you dont change it

Yup i can see blown up turbo / and massive engine wear on its way here!

Will probably push the already clogged up pick up pipe passed its limit

:wall:

Special ?? ... It may have just needed a good service and a run ....

Not always a good idea running a thinker oil to hide smoking as mentioned earlier buddy .

It also depends on weather your car is set for Fixed or variable service intervals to the oil you use, but with that grade is not appropriate for UK driving temps.

Also the smoking you mention is probably not oil related, but condensation related. These cars suffer with smoky water vapor coming out exhaust, certainly if car is doing short journeys and on cold start up.

yes dont forget that all the engine breathers go back into the intake so the oil vapours get burned off.

Right, point taken guys. That will be coming out this afternoon.

I'll hold my hands up, im not a massive petrol head and a bit confused now.

It has been running on 5W40 for years. Was told to put thicker oil in now, 20W50 is the thickest the book says i can put in.

VR1 says that is is designed for turbo engines for racing and road use.

Been told it needs thicker oil then 5W40 but what?

What is the thickest stuff i can safely put in there?

10/40

We offer good advise buddy, I think you appreciate we are not having a go at you...

I would not get concerned by trying to use the thickest oil, certainly if it is coming from the same garage.

Also need to confirm if you are smoking oil or water vapor.

Most folks on here would be typically using a 5/30 or stop at 10/40

A good brand 5/30 can stay lubricating better and longer than a bad 20/50 oil in these engines and keep a better consistancy.

Use this site http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-337-small-500ml.aspx to help you get recommended oil and alternative oil for you car.

You can enter reg to be exact

hope this helps

Ok, better day.

What colour smoke were you getting and when? Be clear about things like "only on cold starts", "coming off over-run", "only when flat-shifting"... There's a good chance that your issue is worn oil seals, condensation, or ring flutter, and could be fixed fairly cheaply to free, or really is "they mostly all do that".

Also, 20W oil just means that it's thick when cold, and is likely to make most wear problems worse. Also, it will give you issues with the hydraulic tappets, particularly in sustained high rev running.

Oh i do appreciate all the advice i get off the guys on this site. Like i said, im not a mechaninc, i design buildings for a living so any help about my car is always welcome.

So the smoke....well, the blue hazy smoke

I dont get any blue smoke on start up. I do get the water vapour that goes when the engine and exhaust are warm.

The only time the blue smoke occurs is when im letting the engine break. So before coming to a junction and hitting the break peddle etc. It isnt something that happens all the time but it was starting to become more frequent. Especially when letting the engine break going down hill.

This all started to happen after I carried out its last service. During which i changed, oil (for the usual 5W40), oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, plugs, upper breather pipe (y pipe), lower breather pipe and the pcv valve had a good clean and put back on. It then went for MOT which it breezed on emissions.

About a week later, I started noticing the blue hazy smoke. Spoke to audi parts centre and was told to put thicker oil in as its a higher mileage car (112k) and the tolerances propably arnt what they once were.

Went and brought VR1 20W50 as it is the thickest recomended in the hand book and it stated on the bottle it was for turbo engines for racing or road so i thought i was doing the right thing.

Since running the VR1, will be a week tomorrow, there has been no smoke at all and seems to be running great. Just the condensation on start up.

Thanks for reading and any advise you have.

Have just got a bottle of 10W40 to put in tonight.

Is it 10/40w semi and meets the VW spec?

  • Author

It is a Durablend semi-synthetic that meets VW 501.01.

Ok, blue smoke definitely indicates that oil is getting into the combustion chambers from somewhere. Doing so on overrun indicates that it's happening under high vacumn, and not doing so on cold starts suggest the valve stem oil seals are probably ok.

The next thing to do is dry and wet compression tests to check for worn bores. If the pressure rises in the wet test, then you have worn bores or maybe a broken piston ring. If the compression is down on only one cylinder, my money would be on the ring.
