Ashtray light - what to do with it?

Featured Replies

I'd be interested in what you do with this as well. I thought about drilling a hole in the corner of the cup holder and attaching the light to shine through there so it lights up the cup holder and with it not being too bright, it won't be a distraction.

Could you Dremel out a hole in the cupholder in the side so the old light fixing could be refitted? Or wouldn't it be flush enough to put cups in?

It shouldn't make any difference to the cup holder itself as it will be tooked away in the corner but will still add some light to the area.

I may do this. It's not as if I particularly need the bottom left corner of my coke can illuminated, but I suppose it gets the light out of the way.

The phone charger is more appealing though, if it can be done.

Even better, could I use it to power a USB charger or cigarette lighter? Or would that draw too much current?

Yes, it probably would. I doubt the wiring to the light is up to the task.

And, it would only function when the lights are on wouldn't it?

This is a much better plan.

you can get a green bulb for the ashtray from skoda so if you did this it would match the dash lights

I'd imagine so but I think it would be way too bright for what you are using it for. Probably light most of the car up! Lol

The old bulb is part of a black plastic holder but with some effort pulls out but I think it fits a little further in than the base wedge of the led you've linked so its 50/50 on it fitting or not

Cheers.

I'm sure a bit of darkened plastic/film over the LED would dull it down enough to not light up the whole car. :D

Good to see you're still floating around here to offer your valuable advice.

It just holds one can/drink.

I've always wanted to move the light to under the heating controls.

Extend the wires ad mount above the cubby hole.

You may not need to extend the wires as they run from the dash direction anyway, so it might just be a case of relocating the light to where you want and cutting a hole for it to shine through or for the wire to come out of.
