replacing the alternator on an Estate

Featured Replies

Hi thanks for taking the time to read this,

its a long story so I'll try and break it down.

had the alternator replaced on my estate unfortunately the garage didnt fit the power steering pump bracket back properly (as I've been told this is removed to give better access to fit the new alternator) and as its only made of aluminium became damaged with the vibrations of the engine, fell off and then I had to have a new power steering pump fitted. I have tried to sort this out with the original garage but they have ignored all telephone and letter communications thinking I will just "go away"

I only wish them reimburse me for he cost of having a new power steering pump fitted (£300) but unfortunately like I've mentioned they are just ignore me.

so I am now about to take them to small claims court, as part of my case proving all the attempts of communication, the fact the car had a engine service 7 days before they fitted the new alternator and the actual old fuel pump bracket (picture attached) I would also like to have it confirmed that the power steering pump is removed to fit a new alternator.

any help on this matter would be much appreciated

just for reference I'm based in bristol

Regards Rudy

What's the engine code?

Hi thanks for getting in touch I will check and get back to you regards

You have an ASV engine (1.9l TDi 110). On this car, when replacing the alternator, you only have to remove the steering (vane) pump if you have air conditioning. To remove the steering pump, you need to remove it's pulley to get to it's mounting bolts. If you have a/c, then the steering pump will be on top of the alternator.

Do you know what was wrong with the alternator?

Was it something to do with the freewheel pulley?

Hi thanks for getting back to me

the garage informed me that the alternator had stopped working which made sense as the battery was not being charged so went flat, I manually charged the battery and it again went flat. My car does have A/C.

unfortunately why the alternator was not working I do not know.

I just want to confirm to fit a new alternator to my car they would of had to touch the power steering pump bracket which they then did not refit properly causing it to vibrate which resulted in the actual pump falling off.

regards
