Lock Nut Lost

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I wonder if anybody on here can help me. I have a 2010 Superb II and my lock nut key is lost. I've been to Skoda, VW and Audi dealers trying their sets of lock nut keys, but no luck. They claim that they just don't have mine in their kit, but I'm beginning to think that it's not a VW group lock nut (even though it looks damn similar). Can any of you guys help me out, is this a VW group lock nut or should I just give up the search? I know I could get a cold chisel and knock off the outer ring and then remove with a reverse thread lock nut remover. But, I'm afraid I could damage my alloys.

This is how a tyre fitter removed all four of my old wheel nuts on my previous car when my locking nut key split whilst trying to replace one wheel.

Also believe you can now get a kit like below

Hard to say if we're looking at the same thing:

I recently lost my locking key (again) :) My friendly dealer didn't have my one (no 61) and VAG had discontinued it :(

So 20mm socket over the top with the help of a hammer and all sorted, well 3 out of 4 anyway. 4th was just too tight for the socket to keep a grip. For that one I took to a local tyre fitted who had no problem getting it off.

I'm not bothering with locking wheel nuts as it takes no effort to get them off with the right tools.

Have tried a Gator Grip socket?

Worked on an old car i used to have.

Happened once : one tyre went flat, and that f*cking lock nut wouldn`t open ! There was no way that it could be opened, and my work day was cut short. Then I decided, that never again, as long as I live, my car will not have any kind on lock nuts...... :@

That looks like a non skoda / VW group locking bolt, so its no wonder the dealer could not remove it.

You'll need to follow the advise earlier in the thread, and purchase another set (McGard perhaps).

i've just bought a car as a project & 1 of the problems was that it didn't have the locking nut key. The lock nuts are mcgaurd & luckily they stick out a fair bit from the alloys. So all i did was use my grinder to square it off a bit then knocked a 16mm socket on to it then just removed them with breaker bar

Yours luck quite sunken in so if you don't want to try drilling & tapping etc i'd suggest phoning a few garages etc. There are tools out there designed for the job such as dynomec which i've thought about buying myself

Thanks for all the help guys, I'm going to try some of your solutions if the replacement key doesn't work. I've found out that my LOCKING WHEEL BOLT is KEY 766. I can't get this key in Ireland but the lads over on www.skodaparts.com are going to send it over to me. I hope this works so I don't have to risk damaging my wheels. I'll be back on here if it doesn't! And I'll throw the bolts as far as I can when I get them off, nuisance! I suppose the tyres are more valuable than the wheels these days!

Ouch! That is a lot more than I would have expected to pay.

Yeah, when you have no key you are in the palm of their hand! I'm paying this to ensure my wheel doesn't get damaged, I didn't even price around, I'm that desperate! Driving around with a baby in the car and fearing a puncture is not nice, believe me it's worth the 30 quid for the peace of mind alone!

I would still have locking wheel nuts , not had a problem with the Skoda ones but with a Superb wheel running at £160-£170 + tyre and fitting thats over £1000 should they go missing

Look at www.lockingwheelnutsremoved.com they got my locking wheel nuts off even after the dealers had beaten one out of recognition as a wheel nut.

Key 766 worked! A relief I can tell you! Thanks to Tomasz at www.skodaparts.com

I'm in two minds regarding taking off the lock nuts altogether or keeping them on. Does anybody know if the Skoda car alarm triggers once jacked? If so, can't the alarm do the job of the lock nuts!?

Excellent news - which reminds me that I need to make a note of my car's locking wheel nut key code just in case.

No a thief can get the wheels off without the alarm triggering
