Friday Blues - Shattered rear windscreen

Featured Replies

Bah - all I need on a wet Friday morning.

Go out to the car this morning, chuck my bag in the boot, close it down and then half my rear windscreen falls in!

Closer inspection and there is a stone, I'd say no more than a couple if inches across on my rear parcel shelf. Now if I was going to put in a windscreen I'd use something "meaty" so I'm going to guess it was one of the lorries that are known to thunder along at times chucking the stone up.

My alarm didn't go off (that I remember) and the glass was intact for those few seconds as my tail went down and the glass fell in.

So I'm sitting here now waiting for Autoglass to call me back to arrange replacement. I'm told on the phone this needs to be done under cover, which is difficult when I have none and it is indeed raining. I can also think of plenty of other things I'd like to spend £65 on!

Now my fear is they cannot get glass today (told on phone all glass is ordered but they should have it by 11:00am). Don't want to make the drive into work in case it can't be done today.

Bah :)

Feel for you - had a similar incident with my Octavia Estate when a truck reversed and smashed the rear window.

Again windscreen place had to do undercover and had to drive to Sheffield, the nearest depot with one in stock to have it done.

Hope you get it sorted.

I had the back window smashed on an A4 avant, some scrote smashed it looking for valuables in the boot, all they took was the litre of oil and its zip bag, I had to wait 5 days for a window as the B8 avant had only just come out.

Hope you get it sorted today and get the broken glass out of the car.

Just had a call from Autoglass. They tell me they will have the glass in later this morning.

They will come out this afternoon (no fixed time at the moment) however if it's raining and as I have no cover I would need to follow them to the depot and have it done inside - essential the bonding doesn't get wet for the first half an hour or something.

Could have been worse, I could have had a call saying "Sorry mate - no glass, might take a while".

Even if they cannot get glass, a temporary fix is usually carried out using a perspex replacement until the correct glass is available.

Disaster!

Autoglass man is out. Made sure it's the right size so started removing all of the old glass.

Then he notices that there is some kind of aerial integrated into the glass. I honestly had no idea there was one?

My car came with the Columbus as a factory option (although I didn't bet BT) - so there is a diversity aerial in the screen?

Anyway, this glass hasn't got this in. He calls back to his HQ and none of his suppliers have such a piece of glass either. So now they are attempting to speak directly with Skoda.

So all he can do is clean everything up and make it water-tight - I really don't fancy driving the car around like that, but at the moment he cannot give me any kind of ETA on this.

Anyone else hit such issues before?

as in post three above, 5 days to ship glass from Audi.

Good luck, I got given a 3 week wait. By the way.... depot repairs are available so my fitter told me.

Well after just over a week I now have a rear windscreen once more.

Eventually they were able to source the glass I required and it was fitted just moments ago.

There is however one slight issue. The guy removed all of the panels he possibly could from the tailgate and removed a load of glass. However there is still the noise of some sliding glass whenever you open or close the tail.

He showed me this and also told me that there was just no way he could get this out. That it's inside the actual tailgate and there is only a small hold to access said area.

Recommendation was to squirt in some grease or silicon and then do some opening and closing of the boot for about five minutes. The remaining lose glass should get caught up and the noise will stop.

Some trapped glass in some grease is not going to cause me any problems.

Anyone heard of this? Are things designed in such a way that it is possible tog et glass trapped inside the tailgate? As much as the noise is annoying there is no way I can justify a brand new tailgate!

So thoughts on the whole situation. Grease or silicon going to be the way forward?

Ta

I would of thought silicone will make it more slippery in there so not really a cure. Thick grease might do it.

Is there a way to get a Vacum cleaner nozzle in to suck the bits out?

That would be a better suggestion - take the trim off the inside rear and see if there is anywhere a vacuum nozzle would fit. I'm sure they're would be.

I'll have another investigation once I get home this evening.

It's quite possible the guy from Auto Glass just wanted to get the job done and be out of there. However he was a really great chap, chatted and he seemed honestly upset he couldn't leave the job "perfect" in his opinion.

He said that there was only a small hole that accessed where the glass was and he could see no way of getting it out.

Does the trim remove quite easily from the tailgate?

From my experience on the my Octavia estate, the trim unclips round the edge. Be careful when removing the clips though as they tend to break quite easily.

Well I gave things a go and got nowhere. That rear trim just doesn't want to come off - well three clips did, however one of those came off the trim rather than out of the bodywork so really not happy giving this a go myself.

Spoke to the dealership where I got the car from and explained the situation. I'm taking the car in on Wednesday next week and while I wait they are going to remove the trim and see if they can get the remainder of the glass out.

In the past they have had the need to do spot (sp?) welding and that leaves something lose inside body work. In that case they have used some expanding foam which has stopped the item moving around and hasn't caused any other issues.

So if they can't get the glass out they said they are willing to give that a try.

So probably worth the hours labour it will end up costing me as then I won't make things worse.
