EGR fault

Featured Replies

Hiya i have a 55 plate Ocyavia with 150k on the clock & the engine managment light is on, the fault code is P0401 generic EGR flow insafficiant. can any one let me know were it is & how to fix it, or is this a garage job & not for the likes of me.

many thanks Gerry.

Either your EGR valve is clogged up or faulty, or your MAF is faulty.

My money is on the EGR being full of crud or faulty.

If you can't find the EGR valve I would take to a garage - it is a messy job cleaning them out.

Which engine do you have and someone will point you in the direction of the EGR valve as its location varies from the front to the rear of the engine depending .......

Thanks Andyvee, the engine is a 1.9 TDI. I dont mind getting my hands dirty, i think its full of crud as to i didnt use the car for a week & when i used it again the fault had gone but it came back again after 3 days !!!!. so if any one can point me in the right direction i would be very happy.

all the best Gerry

Thanks i had a look at that thread, call me stupid but it relates to the car being in limp mode!!! mine isnt yet so do i have to do all that for my fault, can i just clean the top bit of the EGR!!!, or will that be the next problem with my car if i dont follow the insructions!!!. some very good photos & comments so some one has taken a lot of time & effort into doing this. Many thanks Gerry

No you don't have to do all that, just remove the EGR and clean it with carb cleaner.

Thanks for that if the weather is good at the weekend i will have a go at that & let you how i get on. thanks again.

All the best Gerry. :whew:

I'm not endorsing their use, as I've not sued them myself, but there are EGR 'cleaners' in the form of an aerosol can that is sprayed into the air inlet. Wynns and Forte spring to mind as major brands. There are also fuel additives which claim to clean, or at least reduce, the build up ont he EGR

Halfords / eBay search for egr cleaner throws up loads of options.

I'm seriously sonsidering using the fuel additive every now and then, having just been lucky with an out of warranty replacement from VW
