Heavy Duty Rear Springs needed for towing

Featured Replies

Hi,

The back end of my '05 Octavia 1.9tdi Ambiente sits very low when towing so I would like to fit some heavy duty rear springs.

So the question is:-

Are genuine Skoda HD springs readily available or would Octy Estate springs be heavier and be suitable (I assume they would fit).

What about aftermarket HD springs....which?

Any advice or thoughts appreciated.

I have a vrs with standard springs on all round, she goes down a bit when I put my caravan on the back but that's the norm. Make sure your not going over the maximum nose weight for the car which I believe is 75kg. Exceeding this can create all sorts of problems.

As far as I'm aware, the estate has the same rate springs as the hatch. The rear end does seem to drop quite easily on the Octavia though, our job cars were always scraping their back ends - that said the boot was full of gear all of the time.

How many miles has yours got? Ours lead very hard lives but usually benefited from new springs/dampers at about 60k miles whicle lifted everything back up into place again.

Have you thought about the option of fitting coil spring assisters? They ensure that the vehicles springs do not bottom out whilst towing. Had some on my Cavalier many years ago and worked a treat. You can leave them in situ all year round and are a lot cheaper than replacing the springs. Towsure do them in various sizes.

Thanks for the input.

The car has done 85,000miles. I am towing a lightweight car trailer with a small single seater racing car on it. Total weight max 750-800kg. Previous cars cars of the same size etc I have had no problem with. Years ago I fitted Estate car springs to a Cavalier and they worked a treat, just wondered if anyone had done anything similar with the Octavia.

It has now been suggested to me to try MAD helper springs....anyone fitted any? I will also look at Towsure as suggested.

ive looked into different springs and ive been advised that if you fit stiffer springs at just the back it will affect the handling in a negative way.

I was told the best thing to do is change all 4 springs or use spring assisters which you can remove when you dont have the weight

im going to be having over 75kg all the time so new springs all round for me

Don't seem to have a problem with mine, no spring assistors etc. just standard springs and shockers. Good load in the back and 75kg noseweight on.
