dual mass flywheel diagnosed by ear

Featured Replies

I have a 2005 1.9tdi DSG auto I took it to a local automatic transmission specialist for the gearbox oil to be changed.

It has not been any trouble and has been running perfectly smoothly, I wanted to be sure that all was OK before a caravan touring holiday.

he rang me to tell me the oil change was done but that a noise he could hear on starting and stopping the engine indicated that the flywheel was about to fly appart.

I am now faced with a £1500 bill instead of £135 am I being taken for a ride?

Tell him to do one!

I had my DMF & clutch replaced at my local garage, £355!

I have a good deal with the garage I use, I've been with them for years.

Normal price would be somewhere about £450/550

It's a manual gearbox tho

You're being taken for a ride.

£1500 is way over the odds for a DMF replacement on a DSG. It's a £400 part if you don't shop around....otherwise darkside have the part for under £300. I'd suggest 6 hours labour to do the job. So all in no more than £700 tops.

Anyway, how does he actually know it's about to fly apart? The flywheel on my 2.0TDI DSG has been making noises worse than yours for at least the last 20,000 miles/2 years......it still hasn't flown apart.

I say, tell him to do one too.

By DMF has been clearly audible for the last 40,000 miles.

Take it somewhere else.

The DMF was pretty ropey on my old 1.8tdci focus for as long as i owned it... certainly didnt fly apart ;)

Infact i was told by 2 seperate ford dealers to not worry about it until u can feel pulsing through the clutch pedal when feeding it out... especially on downshifts when your going down the box using engine breaking.

Not sure how this would fork on a dsg box....but still no detonation.

Noise noticed at 75k miles, car sold at 120k ;)
