* De-cat pipe *

Featured Replies

now then fabia boys,

im wanting to get rid of my cat, what are the Pro's and Con's for doing this??

whats your opinion on a good de cat pipe?

cheers for your time!

boxy

There are no cons.

Better gas flow so a few extra bhp for a pro.

Miltek for a de cat pipe... Well that's what I have.

Cons:

Cost

Insurance implications

Possbile legislation change in future

Possible loss of BHP at certain points in the rev range

Reported cases of blown turbo after this and certain remaps

Pros:

Posssible BHP increase at certain points in the rev range

the only con I could think of which I wasn't sure about,

MOT's on diesel cars its just a probe that goes in exhaust and tests for excess exhaust gasses,

I didn't know whether removing it would make it a lot more smokey that's all :)

so its just a case of cutting old cat out and welding a straight pipe in its place?

cheers rooney

how likely is blowing the turbo with the cat removed and it being remapped then fred?

so its not guaranteed bhp increase mate?

From the many sources and word of mouth speaking to tuning circles, all it will do is help the turbo spool up quicker and you'll hear the turbo, offers almost nothing performance because the it isn't restrictive to begin with.

I have seen at least 2 posts on this forum of people saying they had turbo issues not long after a decat.

Was it related? possibly not, but its something to consider and is therefore on the con list.

In terms of it giving more power the post by ajs_vrs backs me up.

con/pro if you like it-you could release the pigeon that some tdi cars have trapped inside.

hmmm so in hind site its not even worth doing then..? only positive thing as it stands then is it spools up the tiniest bit quicker probably unnoticeable and hearing the turbo a bit more..?

MOT laws have changed as well, so any car factory fitted with a Cat needs to have a Cat to pass an MOT from what I've been told.

I have a full system on mine and I like it.

My opinion anyway

ive just rang my mate up whos an mot tester and he says the same, shockingly in all fairness I thought that was hear say but your right mate, it isn't... :( that's a bit crap isn't it lol!

that full system comes with a cat then?

so how do people get around the MOT each year, for the ones who have de-cat'd they're exhaust??

Just been doing some reading... Cats now have to be "approved". Lots of cats available on eBay and the like. But most state off road use or more specifically, not road legal.

so correct if im wrong, if they have been "bsau approved" or whatever it is, then that's fine reference ones on miltek pipes etc??

so all this de-cat'ing doesn't actually pass in an MOT though..?? its all a bit up in the air lol!

Hi

I have Milltek sports cat being fitted today ,as well as Turbo Dynamics stage 2 turbo, along with Forge fmic

Is the cat a mot pass ???

thanks Trev

Yeah I know, it does suck.

And no I don't have a car I've got a straight pipe straight from the turbo.

Only thing to do is keep your old cat and just have to put it on for MOT and then remove after.

hmm :( how much of a faff around would that be to put the old cat back on though??

Well depending on what system you buy as i think some systems have a join where the cat goes so just bolt on, bolt off or the option is a sports cat if they do one for a diesel, don't quote me on it though. Lol

Just save your money and a shed load of hassle and leave it standard.

Start a pot of money thats either for if your car breaks, or to put towards a new one in future.

Thats my advice.

I have a piper decat. Lovely bit of kit.

Sounds lovely, lots of turbo whistle which I like.

On a standard car I did notice that it spoiled up a little quicker but that might have been in my head.

If you're going to tinker with the exhaust it's the first thing you should do.

Cat backs do nothing but make tractor sounds louder.

I know what ur saying, and it is the most sensible thing to do, but its a hobby for me, I enjoy modifying it and making it that bit different to standard ones..

Cars are my hobby too.

But at some point you have to look at what returns your getting for your money and here its poor.

Tell you what, if you have money burnign a hole in your pocket then do this....

Go buy some new tyres!!

Michelin Pilot Sport 3.

Your car will get off the line quicker, it will stop quciker and it will go around a corner faster.

Its big all round upgrade and also adds an incresed level of safety.

Its win win and a far better place for your cash.

I'm after a decat for my standard exhaust, all I've found is this eBay - 300803513149 seems expensive for a decat and don't know if it will fit the standard exhaust or will it only fit a Miltek system?
