Does anyone know of a suitable connector cable to join my iPod nano (square shape) to my Amundsen unit?

There are two main ways though, buy the Skoda MDI (£175) or use a 3.5mm jack male to male cable through the Aux socket located in the central jumbo box.

I have used an iPod on my Amundsen using a 3.5mm lead. Works ok. BTW the socket on the Amundsen is on the front f the unit not in the jumbo box.

I usually use my iPhone using Bluetooth and you can control the tracks this way

Your dealer may be able to do an aftermarket MDI fit or you can do it yourself(it just plugs in to the back of the head unit) but will need to be able to use VCDS to enable it.

You can use the aux input from the headphone out put pf the nano-but controlling it would be a No while driving.
