Canton Sound System: pointless?

Featured Replies

I've not found anything in the menu about the noise cancellation, but I think the Canton is well worth the extra money.  It sounds as good as I've heard car stereo sound and the standard system is rubbish.

Keeping perspective here - Canton is good but there's plenty better (and worse of course) out there as OE factory fitment. Even just looking at the MQB C segment - Golfs Dynaudio offers better bass and separation/detail and the B&O in the A3 is superb imo; more of everything and a half decent sound stage too. The Seat sound system is very bassy and goes loud but isn't particularly articulate in terms of sound. The best factory systems Ive heard so far have been a B&O system in a friends A6 and I also like the new 5 series Harmon Kardon - they are a league above Canton. Canton does provide a better sound experience than the standard setup though so is money well spent imo. :)

  • DVD's :-) I will soon have a mobile cinema for when I go camping, or have to wait around when picking the SWMBO up.

  • Its doesnt allow video in motion but it doesnt stop the audio from playing through the speakers so you should still be able to enjoy the delights of 5.1 audio on the move.

  • But if you feed it a crap audio source don't expect loads of bass.   320kbps mp3, CDA or FLAC if you want to feel the bass   You won't get much bass out of poor mp3 rips, DAB or FM radio

Plus is only £500 , I would expect the B&O and H&K systems cost a lot more . I specced BOSE on my old e class and it was a lot more than £500!

Canton definitely ought be alot better than the stock system through better amplification and addition of centre fill and subwoofer speakers.

But then again it is a Skoda Octavia....more premium OEM ICE will likely sound better.

I think much of it is down to personal taste. My Dad used to have a very.high spec A5 Sportback and that had the Audi Sound System (not B&O) so 10 speakers (8 + centre + spare wheel mounted sub and 180w aplification) and it sounded great. V bassy with good clarity and went v loud.

Friend had B&O in his A5 coupe and to my ears did not sound as good and lacked bass...v shrill from what I remember.

My Dad now has a HK equipped M135i and again whilst it goes v loud and is v clear....its not that bassy to my ears and whilst on paper its a better system I preferred the system in the A5.

Actually in terms of stock systems I dont think anything Ive listened to in recent years gave me as much enjoyment as my Mk2 vRS with Amundsen+ and stock 8 speaker system....wasnt subtle but loud with epic low end for what in truth was a cheap car....pees all over the stock Mk3 system.

The thing is that everybody hears sound differently, what sounds good to one would sound awful to another

Getting a sound system to sound really good in a tin box with enormous outside noise is a pretty impossible task , I've gone for expensive aftermarket systems in the past and its a nightmare, change one component and something else needs changing you never get totally happy with it , better to accept some compromise in my opinion

Hi there,

I'm in the process of ordering my O3. Or actually I have already ordered it but I want to modify the option list by adding the Canton Sound System. I have read a lot of pros and cons about this system. But one feature got my attention. It's the "vehicle Noise Cancellation" that is mentioned in the UK brochure. Here in the Netherlands it is not mentioned at all. So far I have only found it in the Irish , Australian and British brochure. Sadly asking Skoda directly does not give me much information.

I don't know if the Canton System used in the Skoda's for the Dutch marktet is different from the one installed in Skoda's for the countries mentioned above.

So I thought I'd ask Canton owners in other countries if they have any experience with the noise cancellation feature. If so, is there any way to see if a Canton system has this feature (e.g. settings you can adjust in the menu). if I can check it this way I can go to a dealer and check it out.

I guess another way to test it is play an audio file with just silence and then, while driving, turn the audio system off and on. if there is any difference in audible vehicle noise then the feature is available and working .

Cheers,

Roel

Hi Roel

I have Canton (with Amundsen).

About active noise cancellation:

- there's nothing in the menu regarding this function

- there's no difference in road noise when turning on/off the infotainment during driving

- I did not try the silence audio file but I think if it's active noise cancellation then it must be on all the time

- my car has the same road noise compared to the other O3's without Canton.

I think the Canton system worth the money but don't expect deep basses. You won't feel it in your chest. Only in your head.

The system is not bad, the amount of the bass is more than enough (I have Combi) but the sub doesn't go deeper than 80-100 Hz.

Actually the speakers in front doors go a little bit deeper I think.

My subwoofer settled in around ~30k km. The only effect is more bass (no deeper freqs). I had to lower the subwoofer volume from 8 to 5-6 and that's all.

Currently I am thinking of a subwoofer retrofit...

No idea about the noise cancelling option. It will be useless when yous elect sport and the sound generator messes with it again :D .

As others have said it all comes down to personal preference, But I don't think it's easy to compare when at the dealers, as both systems need to run in for a while and the conditions have to be the same , and and and. I chose the Dynaudio in my Scirocco and like it a lot. No idea if it's that much better than the stock, but hey better safe than sorry.

As I said above I like the the Dynaudio in my Scirocco, and I doubt that the Canton will be as good but it only costs half as much and the sound proofing on the Scirocco seems better.

In Luxembourg Seats have the reputation of being the typical cars for posers, so the description of their sound system matches ;)

We have the canton in the vRS and B&O in the S3. I would say the canton is worth it over standard. B&O is way up on it but canton is still a good sound

Half as much?! The Dynaudio is £460 and the Canton setup is £500! And yes, sound proofing in the Golf/Scirocco is a denser material than used in the Octavia.

Agree on that although the A3 B&O is my favourite audio in the class though. :)

Yip mine too, really is good

Dynaudio in my Scirocco was about 700€ in 2009. The Canton is 415€ now. Though I had to add 125€ to get the Bolero as Canton isn't available with the Swing. In the Scirocco it worked with the stock radio.
