My DPF has done 104k...remove now or wait ?

Hi guys, it’s a while since ive been on here, my vrs has been behaving itself ! {unlike last year when i lived on here }...

Anyways…

My dpf has done 104k and {touch wood} is giving no problems, but I was just wondering how long they last before they need replacing/removing?

I don’t know whether to remove now before I get the dpf light and regen/limp mode problems or wait until this all happens before doing something….

Like I said, I have had no major dpf problems since I had the sensor changed nearly 2 and half years ago, and in that time ive only seen the dpf light on about 4 times and this was always due to being stuck in slow moving traffic for at 30+mins but I always cleared the light by driving at 60mph/2500rpm 10min routine.

My 40 mile daily commute to work is down the A5, so I can drive at mostly at 60 and my vrs only drinks BP, so all this must help the regens the dpf has to make!

So guys…what to do???

Simply put... if it aint broke don't fix it in my opinion.

If you know someone with vcds locally, or dealer?, see if they can give you a soot loading reading. 40 grams is the max before no regens can be performed and this should give you a rough idea what you have left?

From memory the service schedule says it should be looked at 80k odd. Not sure what they can look at other than give you the soot loading?

If you know someone with vcds locally, or dealer?, see if they can give you a soot loading reading. 40 grams is the max before no regens can be performed and this should give you a rough idea what you have left?

From memory the service schedule says it should be looked at 80k odd. Not sure what they can look at other than give you the soot loading?

Yeah thanks for that, my mate has got vcds so hopefully he can give me a reading.

Whst did you do when your dpf got to 122k ?

Looked at loads of options but decided to trade it in. Was quoted £1800 to replace the dpf and about £700 to get it removed, plus needed a Cambelt and disc and pads all round and just could not afford it. It was still worth a few quid as a trade in so decided to cut my losses and got a 1.9tdi l&k which is ok but a lot slower, but need to save the pennies :)

Do miss the car but sometimes have to be practical lol

Well I've just had a diagnostic check done on my dpf after a oil and filter change and its 9% full...

So the guy said its still got plenty of life in it, my vrs is 5 and half years old and coming up for 106k...

that sounds like the amount of soot rather than ash, iirc the ash content is reported in grams rather than a %

As above you have been given the soot loading (%), this won't give you an indication of the condition of the DPF, it's simply a measure of how close to the next regeneration you are.

What you need is the 'Ash MAFF level' which is given in grams.

Once the soot is burnt off during a regen an amount of ash is left inside the DPF. It is the level of ash that determines the life of the DPF, once it gets too high (and begins to cover the filter and reduce its effectiveness) the DPF has to regen more often and it's then only a matter of time before it's done for good.

Mileage or age on their own aren't really accurate measures for the DPF life. A DPF that lives on the motorway will last much longer than one that rarely gets hot enough for passive (instead of active) regens.

Likewise a car that's driven hard might get the DPF nice and hot but the engine will be producing more soot for the DPF to burn off.

I bought my Octavia VRS 3 years ago, at the time it had 4 owners and not 56k . I thought not much of it as the car was in great condition.

However, I ve a few issues with my DPF, after 2-3 days of local/road driving the DPF warning light comes on and I have to take it for a brisk drive on the motorway or A roads.

There lies the problem. A mapped car generally chucks out a lot more soot which means your dpf will clog quicker.

Is yours a PD by any chance?

Do any of you have a photo of an octavia Vrs exhaust system... Where exactly is the cat? I had my Dpf removed and I'm worried it will fail test on emissions! Exhaust looks like there is no cat on it! Maybe I'm just blind & drunk! :)

Diesels don't undergo an emissions test as such.

They are tested for soot. The MOT tester blips the throttle and a probe up the exhaust reads the soot deposits.

Not having a DPF will mean the reading will be higher (my DPF equipped PD170 gave a soot level of 0!) but as long as you get the engine nice and hot before the test you should be fine.

The PD170 does also have a cat though too.

Ok cheers mate. I'm in Ireland though, not sure how they do the test over here! Fingers crossed!

Only a smoke test in Ireland. And will stay that way for an other few years I'd say.
