felicia 1.3 rear coil spring mount FAIL.

Featured Replies

Hi everyone my 1998 Felicia failed an MOT yesterday on a few things. The main issue I need some advice with is the rear coil spring mounts. Where is best to get them from?

How easy are they to replace?

It also states on the fail sheet that the 'front nearside wheel bearing is rough' or words to that effect. I don't have the sheet in front of me as I'm in work. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks again in advance.

  1. How are you at welding? The usual way of replacing a spring mount is to weld in a new one.
  2. That's "only" an advisory. Ignore it unless/until the bearing is actually noisy enough to be annoying.

Welding is nowhere in my list of abilities. I can screw and unscrew nuts and bolts. Seems I may be stuck then. Wanted to keep cost to a minimum but if there is no other way I don't have a choice. Thanks for your help anyway.

Info on front wheel bearing (assuming its not just an advisory!)

The rear shocks (with spring new platforms) can be got for £25 each. I bought some of these recently:

Ok, on checking http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_250.htm it seems that "excess play or roughness" in a wheel bearing can be a reason for failure. A bearing can be VERY NOISY and still only generate an advisory though.

Also, I'd presumed that the spring platform issue related to the top platform rather than the bottom one.

If so that is just held in place by the shock top mounting nut? I'm pretty sure the whole strut assembly including the top spring platform can be removed. So no welding needed to replace.

That was certainly the case with mine a few years back.

Yes, ignore Ken, he just says lots of general stuff which is usually wrong for that reason.

Replacing the rear damper complete will sort the problem, one nut at the top, one nut/bolt at the bottom (with the car jacked up, of course). Straightforward, but you'd want to do them in pairs for obvious safety-related reasons. Sometimes getting the top nut undone can be a bit of a pain as access can be difficult depending on the spanner you use , but if you have an impact/wheel nut gun it'll be off in seconds.

Thanks for your help everyone. Certainly helps make the job a bit easier.

Also I suspect the front wheel bearing have only been an advisory in another garage.

Will let you all know how I get on. Forums are wonderful places x

Thought i would send a quick update. Had the rear shock and springs off the car and it seems i am way out. The mounts are absolutely fine. the fail is on the "rear coil spring CAP". Just having a little bit of trouble locating the part quickly enough for my liking as i really felt a sense of achievement at getting somewhere so quickly. Not sure of anywhere that may stock them close by after searching the internet.
