Undertaking

Featured Replies

Was driving along the M8 last week, car in front wouldn't move over from the right hand lane, I thought I'll just sit here until they do. Next thing I know is the corsa behind me attempts to undertake me and move in. I get really ****ed off when people try to undertake me, I'm waiting on the car in front moving in. Needless to say I didn't let the corsa in. This led to the boys in the corsa pulling along me and furiously telling me to pull over. I gave them a quick thumbs up. They did look quite hard though, and followed me for a bit.

What do you do when people try to undertake you ? Let them ?

  • Shoot me down, but if I'm doing 75mph on the motorway on the inside lane, and I come across a middle lane hogger I will undertake. It's safer than going across three lanes and back again.

If its safe to do so, I try to pull in, however I have before just let them undertake. At the end of the day it's illegal to undertake, so if they want to run the risk of being caught, than let them.

On my way home today, I had a motorcyclist trying to undertake me. Was at a point where two lanes merge into one, so was ready to move over, however I noticed that he was pretty close to me when I checked my left wing mirror. Found it a bit of a stupid thing to do as unfortunately there has been a fair few motorcycle accidents in the region, sadly some of them fatal.

Easy enough to pull back enough for a safe distance,

let them in to tailgate the car that was in front of you.

Its not like one lane or the other gets on much faster, people are undertaking constantly anyway on the M8.

indicate left ....pretend to crash !

Wish they'd adopt the American system of making undertaking legal, would be much simpler lol.

Quite often I find queues on the outside lane of a duel carriageway doing around 55, I'd be doing 70 in the clear inside lane and slow down to 60 and use the bit of the law that says if in traffic and your lane is moving faster you can undertake. Still winds people up when you pass 6 or 7 cars then safely overtake the slow car which the lead car is still 200 meters behind lol

Wtf are you on about??? It's not illegal to undertake.. All you do by sitting in the middle lane of a motorway is highlighting the fact that YOU should have moved over to the left.

Im sure we pass on the right ?

I like undertaking middle lane hoggers!

ill crash you off one day

The problem is there was no middle lane. If I am overtaking I can only go as fast at the car in the right hand lane. Otherwise I would be undertaking which is dangerous

part of the solution

or part of the problem

Pick a side ????

I'll overtake or undertake you if you're not driving at an appropriate speed.

All you do by sitting in the middle lane of a motorway is highlighting the fact that YOU should have moved over to the left.

That luxury isn't always available on our under-funded motorways. Problem with the M8 is most of it's length between Scotland's two largest cities is a mere 2-lanes and hard shoulder, not wide enough, should really be upgraded to at least a 3-lane motorway for it's entire length. This problem intensified by the types that hog middle lanes, hogging the outside lane instead.

As the M8 reaches the busiest points in Glasgow, it becomes 5 lanes wide (both ways), with exits and slips on the left and right. Highway code guidance on undertaking goes out the window, everyone does it, even if cops are present - the setup is too mental to try and police.

But, if it's a 2-lane motorway and some clown is indefinitely hogging lane 2, for no reason, is travelling considerably slower than me and doesn't move over given ample oppertunity, then undertaking at a safe spot (with a good blast of the horn) seems like a perfectly fair, albeit legally challenged option to me.

The other option is to wait indefinitely, then someone else waits behind you, so on and so forth, until there's a massive tailback because the motorway is only being utilised at 50%. If the plonker up front is going slow enough and the outside lane is a 'queue of traffic', then going up the inside (assuming you're already in that lane) seems a fair option too, probably less legally challenged too.

If I find myself being undertook, it's usually when I'm behind other vehicle(s) that are overtaking, when someone sneaks up the inside as far as the vehicle being overtaken, then cuts in (or worse still when it's roadworks and lane closure...with 800 yards notice and they still go as far as the cones allow). Gets on my goat, but 99.9% of the time I don't try and stop them or get upset about it, not worth the trouble.

Middle lane drivers are sometimes fed up of having to replace tyres damaged by driving in the left lane that has been chewed up by trucks and is full of holes and patches.

Otherwise I would be undertaking which is dangerous

What makes undertaking dangerous? Are there ways to undertake safely? Does compromising your own safety by "blocking" the undertake (stopping distance and personal safety) make the situation more or less dangerous?

Chris

ps It's definitely not illegal, but is at odds with the HC :D

Think it's only illegal if you start swapping lanes all the time? Could be wrong lol

I don't bother with the M8 any more, since they opened the rail link I take the train to the Weege, faster and it's cheaper than the parking when you get there. Plus you don't get neds in Corsas winding you up.

If someone was sitting at 60mph in the outside lane are you allowed to pass them at 70mph in the inside lane? If not its stupid. Not saying you have to swerve from one lane to another but if your in the inside lane at the speed limit why should you have to slow down so as not to pass a slower car sitting on the outside lane? Suley undertaking is only illegal under ceratin circumstances otherwise i could sit at 20mph on the outside lane and hold up the entire stretch of road.

Middle lane drivers need to be shot, end of.

our middle lane is the outside lane, and our outside lane has a crash barrier :giggle:

Undertaking in this country is dangerous because people don't expect it so can randomly move left without indicating or looking. That's not an argument for or against just a fact of life.

I've done it and I'll probably do it again but I'll have given the obstructing driver time to more, a few flashes of the lights and even honked the horn. If they're not moving for that they not going to move. Either they're utterly indifferent to the road around them or they're doing it deliberately.

If I must I'll usually boot it past the idiot as fast as possibly.

And that bit of the M8 is mental when it's busy. It's hard to stay in the correct lane since they peel off left and right for different junctions so you get lots of people staying in the middle. Not a great design of road.

Only if YOU are in the wrong lane to start with. If you're driving on the left, everyone else will be able to pass you on the right. Unless you don't like driving correctly or being overtaken. :)

Expect the bikers to be along in a while to tell you that this never happens or, if it does, it'll be your fault for not anticipating such stupidity on the roads.

It strikes me that that is why the driver in the outside lane should be using mirrors and indicate in that situation,

mostly the outside lane merges with the lane inside and if you are doing much the same speeds, its the outside car doing the change and those in or on the inside lane are continuing on their way and trying to decide and anticipate the other road users next move.

The driver about to merge might notice the vehicle on the inside before their merge, the vehicle on the inside will may well have watched them for a while.

Just a daily feature of driving and being aware all around you.

& why bikes have their lights on.

The National speed limit for the type of vehicle, is for all the lanes, its not normally higher for the outside lanes.

(obviously it can be were indicated on overhead gantries etc, which is regularly the case in the likes of Glasgow at the western end of the road in this thread.)

A thought has always crossed my mind and has probably been aired many, many times, but if someone is travelling at 70mph in the centre lane, or indeed the outer lane of a three lane motorway would they be considered 'lane hoggers', accepting that they are travelling at the legal maximum speed limit? I wouldn't condone or do it but just wondered
