yeti 170tdi elegance

Featured Replies

Hello,

I am curious, I bought the yeti with the tdi170 engine and I can not find a lot of complaints or trouble with engine anywhere....

I read there is a lot of trouble with the 1.2 petrol

What is the most reliable engine ?

You may have answered your own question here!!

From my personal experience the 170 is as strong as an ox. Like you I have never seen any comments about its disabilities, so I reckon that you stick with a 170 and you won't go far wrong!

(Ps - I have that engine in my new 'Berb, and it is incredibly creamy, powerful, thrifty - as you'd expect.)

170 diesel is bullet proof. Drive it, don't nurse it, I regularly use 170 of my horses and want more. BossFox won how fast with his last year!

Go steady and it uses very little diesel, push it and it will give you a big smile!

That is so true James.

95000 km and not a thing wrong with the 170. Many short trips too after retirement.

Short trips and 20 mile trips to work and back so far the 170 engine has been a peach.

There are not many cars that I get out of after driving any journey but I find myself grinning like a Wiltshire Cat but the Yeti is one such car (think Cheshire Cat but with a South West accent and claws at the moon in puddles at night)

20,000 miles now. Great engine, remapped to around 200bhp.

Including 500 miles towing over 1500kg and two track days where it was driven flat out at 4,500 and 9,000 miles.

It's loosened up nicely now. :)

Mine is now just over 18000 miles (since March 12), about 4000 of those miles have been towing a 1400Kg caravan. It hasn't missed a beat, so far all it has cost me (NB free servicing!) is a set of wiper blades.

This is my third 170 CR (170 PD before that), previous ones being in Octavia vRS models. The PD and the first CR both has an issue with a sensor - easily fixed by my dealer in minutes - so overall I have had well over 100000 miles of trouble free motoring from the 170 unit.

Interesting that the first CR had a problem. I've had a PD and a CR in the form of vRS Octavia's. The PD gave lots of trouble (namely countless limp home mode incidents, etc.) but was eventually fixed by the garage (after about 2 years I think) whereas the CR in my current vRS and the one in the wifes Yeti that we've recently sold are/were faultless (touch wood in the case of my car).

In fact, I'm seriously thinking of keeping the vRS for another year (taking it to 4 years of ownership), as apart from one very minor exterior door trim issue, it has had no warranty work at all. Plus it's only done 35K miles and we've blown a bigish wodge on the Yeti replacement!

The problem in both cars was only signaled by a warning light ... no fuss... no limp mode.... dealer fixed both in minutes.

Twice had a sensor problem/limp mode on my CR170. First time I was close to the dealers and took it straight there; they kept it overnight to diagnose the problem and I had to get public transport home. Second time (about 6 months later) I limped home and called Skoda Assist; bloke came out and plugged in his computer and fixed it in half an hour. No trouble since. 54000 miles and counting - no other problems. Interestingly I'm sure the motor has significantly 'loosened up' in the last 5000 miles or so, and I seem to be getting smoother performance and better fuel consumption..

One possible reason you read more about 1.2 issues may be that there are more of them. It's supposed to be the most common one in the yeti.

The only time I had a problem with my CR140 diesel was when a sensor got damp, due to the user going through a puddle on Salisbury Plains and the water going over the bonnet....

The RAC cleared the code and it has been perfect since.

My 140 4x4 has now done 64,000 miles and enginewise I've had no problems at all.

Only fault has been a DRL bulb that went quite early on.

What sort of mpg are people getting out of the 170. Looking at getting one. Mixture of motorway and back roads. Hoping to get mid to high 40's. Is this realistic? especially as a cruise at 80 on the autobahn

over 54000 and nearly 3 years it varied from 43 to 44 give or take. Colder weather gave poorer consumption, warmer weather and longer journeys were better.

We averaged 38 / 43mpg over 22,000 miles in our 170.

That's corrected. The onboard computer was nearly 10% optimistic.

You're unlikely to crack 40mpg at 80mph unless you have a tailwind.

The maxidot on mine appears to be around 10% optimistic (based on brim to brim calcs), and figures of 50 or higher (so 45+ actual) only show up on steady journeys at or below 60mph. Recently we went up to Farndale, doing around 75 on the way there and 65 on the way back. The maxidot figures were 39 there vs 47 back!

The best brim to brim value I've had has been 43.5mpg on lighter 16" winter wheels and 42.5mpg on the stock 17"s. Worst has been 38.5 during the first few thousand miles. I do a lot of short journeys which doesn't help, but they are on slower roads so still get around 44-48 on the maxidot. Long term average real mpg (over 11,000 miles) is 41. I'd love to get mid 40s, let alone high 40s, but the Yeti is not sufficiently slippery to get good returns at high speeds.

I expect mine would be around there if I didn't drive around South London so much

Yes. Mike - I'm fortunate to be able to choose my Yeti trips - the Fabia (56mpg) gets the short local duties

Bit like the VW advert, I think of my 170 as a pumped-up GTi. I love the visibility, the lack of roll, mid-range torque is 'humongous' and it is so much fun to drive (town, B, A, M'way). Roofrack is current glued to the top, so mpg is struggling to get above mid-30s, but normally manage early '40s. 17" summer wheels/tyres back on, which gives back its 'authority'.

Bodywork needs a bit of TLC, but our shocking spring weather means another weekend before it will get looked at.

The 170's not an option here unfortunately. So off to Shark next time I'm in the UK. Will also get the bigger discs

Same here 40.6 mpg brim to brim average includes lots of motorway at 75-80mph.
