Aircon mobile service, trustable?

Featured Replies

My Octavia has air con problem, the car out of warranty for few month.

Found some local aircon mobile engineer, who told me that he be able to find the problem for £35 charge. Money is ok but do i have to trust him??

It is very easy to connect some wire, make a clever face, press the button few times and make a conclusion like: Compressor failed, please pay as the money.............

How do they work? I want to know what they are doing, what the process of problem finding????

Thankx

Andrey

Ask him to show you what he is doing and explain things. Much rather have an indy down than leave it with kwik fit or similar. If you car is out of warranty and you purchased it new, you are still covered under SOGA. If not and you have had it FMDSH then you could ask for good will. Otherwise get it scanned from a local brisky member.

I would see if there is anyone near you with VCDS. Your mobile aircon will probably just how much refrigerant there is in the system.

have you spoken to the dealer ?

A/C is a sealed system, maybe as just out of warranty a shared repair / refill

Hmmm interesting.....the reason I'm hmmming is because I had an Air Con service and re-gas at Bosch Services in Cardiff but the damn thing still ain't fixed. I bought a deal on groupon for £35 reduced from £99 and was told it should take 2hrs to complete. My car was booked in for 9am so I went for a shop came back at 11 and the car wasn't finished, it was completed at 11.55 and from what I could tell hadn't even been tested, have I been fleeced coz there's obviously more wrong than just a service?!

Apologies for the thread hijack!!!

If the compressor is shot then you can have plenty of gas in the system but it won't do diddly squat.

FMDSH, what is it?

If the air con system is sealed then no point to call for mobile service. I won't pay any penny to anyone just for coming to open my car bonnet. but go to a dealer it is waste the time also. If you come to claim some from them, they have main aim, to get reed of you ! Stealer next to my house so will go tomorrow just try....

Vcds will show if low on gas. You should be able to tell if the compressor is running.

For a regas goto kwikfit. If it doesn't work or you have a leak, they won't charge you or certainly never used to

Vcds will show if the gas low and also drop the code for compressor? The car was recently connected to vcds but there was anything related to air con.

The compressor is bust on my car at the moment and there are no fault codes. You need to go into the various measuring blocks to see what is happening.

Have a look at this thread.

I was read this threads before, thank you! What was the conclusion in that story? New compressor and few grands out from the pocket???

It should be covered under warranty, the dealer is just slow.

Needs a new compressor, drier and the system flushing.

There's no reason why a mobile engineer should be any different to one in a workshop. Either could potentially give an equally poor level of service. The only difference is that you know exactly where to find the one in a workshop. On the other hand of course, there's no reason why the mobile guy shouldn't be brilliant. If he says it needs a part then why not use him to do the repair just as you would a garage. He doesn't need VCDS or anything similar to tell whether the compressor is dead.

Dead right this. Connect your low & high gauges, blue (low side) red (high), run car-aircon The pressures on gauges will tell all. (Only if you know what you are talking about. LOL )

Yes that's the condenser. Doesn't look in great condition. That could well be your problem. It's hard to tell from the pictures but if it's perforated the gas will have escaped, but even if it's just that air can't flow properly the air con won't work as it should.

O, I fill that I get closer to the problem, good!

Is it important where to buy a condenser? EOM parts or can be from other sources?

It is NOT a condenser problem, if it is leaking you will see some sort of oily patch on or behind it. Get an air con man to test it. It will cost a fortune just to replace parts at will.

+ remember it IS illegal to vent 134 gas to the Atmosphere (big word that) ----the

Of course I won't replace any parts without air con man coming up. My condenser looks wery bad as you can see from the picture. I was seeing the undercover around it and did not find any trace of leak. Maybe the air con dead for long time...

Yes it looks bad, BUT not that bad the rad (is behind it i presume the engine is not getting over hot ?

It could easily be the condenser. How can you possibly know it isn't without seeing the car. Those photos don't show enough to tell. It needs checking out.

That's my plan to see the dealer or Indy to have a look first. Reckon I be lucky to get only condenser failed. The coolant radiator absolutely fine, keep normal temperature all the time. Love my Octy but no ready to spend so much money on it! Soon I need to replace a cam belt, another £500. Maybe someone know where to take easy money???)))))))

There are two normal problems with condensers. 1 being leakage - you will always see an oily mess on or behind the condenser. 2 being blocked air flow. If you read his last post the air flow must be ok because his engine temperature is fine, ie the air goes through the condenser before getting to the radiator. If blocked - less air to radiator - hot engine.

If he gets air con man out he can leak check with a sniffer even if he has to put a little gas in if totally empty.

Just trying to save the guy a few hard earned pounds. Plus I can tell without seeing the car because I used to be an air con engineer in a previous job.

Pete
