Vagcom question...

Featured Replies

You may have seen my last post re the car not starting...

Still no further forward so looking at other options

Would vagcom pick the fault code up even if the car can't fire up?

If your ECU is ok you should still be able to read any codes. Will give you a starting point mate

Thanks for replying, going to try another fuel pump relay first, fingers crossed it cures it...!

From what ive read they very rarely fail tho mate. You should be able feel the relay clicking over if you put your finger on it. Good luck hope you get sorted bud.

before you spend any more money, VagCom it.

Its finding someone local to do it for me...

Local Audi specialist chargres 50 notes to scan and I have to get the car on a low loader for them to do it...

Where abouts are you? Must be someone local with vcds. Or even a cheap obd2 reader will probs give you what info you need

Newcastle, got a code reader but no joy with it...

does it connect and say no codes present?

  • Author

Its not connecting, says link error...

Im going to have a look at the ecu over the weekend as the car has only been driven a dozen or so times since before Christmas, hoping for an iffy earth to it...

Thanks again for replying

If your scanner doesnt connect doubt vcds will mate. Think theres an earth under the pollen filter. Also one somewhere behind the dash. Check for water around the ECU. I have a few ecus mate let me know if you think its the ecu and will send one over to try :-)

When you open door can you hear fuel pump prime?

The relay does fail and worth removing if it doesn't prime and just open the relay and clean the 3 connection points of any material award that causes contact issues.

Won't be the first or last I've seen fail

But I would recommend you get a code reader on and ensure its fully in

Thanks for the replies, I can hear the pump prime when I unlock and open the door yes, the relay clicks if removed and pushed back in...

I cant however hear the pump again after the car turns over and I give up due to not starting unless I lock it up and wait a short while before re-trying.

Code reader done the same on my friends scanner so sadly plugged in enough, just not reading...

I may take you up on the offer of trying another ecu, I'll kick off with the ecu earths and see what its like under the scutle pannel, hoping to find it very damp and the problem to my non starting!

Won't be relay then as that's working as it should.

Basic things to check first if scanner is not working.

Is the cylnder getting fuel? (test the injector)

Is it getting spark?

back to the old school :)

I had this problem when i put the VR in the jetta, i didnt have the correct power to the ECU, It was doing everything it should it just wouldent fire, wouldent scan either.

I have Fuel pump live instead of switched live on the ECU.... luckly the ECU suvived and the correct wire and it now works.

Update for tonight gents!

I took all the wipers etc off to access the ecu, disconnected and terminals are all fine, cleaned up two earths whilst in there too

And still nothing sadly

I have however discovered that I haven't got a CEL anymore, it isn't alluminating at all

Neighbour is a auto electrician and started having a look but it was chucking it down so we gave up as everything was getting a soaking

So, any ideas or experience of similar issues, he's going into work tomorrow to ask about any known issues so fingers crossed

He thinks the ecu isn't getting the necessary live feed similar to what vrssunroof describes happening to his Jetta

Have you had a look at the fuses on top of the battery?

I have, all look fine sadly...

Do you have key symbol flashing on the dash? Could be immo stopping ecu relay energising?

  • Author

I have the key symbol yes, goes off after a couple of seconds though...

I might be wrong but from what I've read the car would start then die if it was the immobilser?

Yep, coughs for a second then dies.

Mines just turning over :(

really sounds like a communicarion problem with the ECU, like its not getting power to tell the engine what needs to be done.

If you have a MultiMeter you can test to see if the ECU is getting power, You just need to know which one is the power Pin on the ECU connection, this is how i tested the Jetta, found the power was wrong, Followed the cable back to the fuse box and found the wrong wire........

anoyingly this setup uses the Fuelpump relay and dosent have a seperate ECU relay like my VR lump.

Fingers crossed your neibour had some better ideas. only problem you have with using another ECU is the Immobiliser is normally coded into the ECU, It will fire then stall but would be a good test. anyone local willing to lend him an ECU? :)

I can lend an immo defeated ecu mate PM me :-) aslong as postage is covered

Thanks for that, out and about now so will pm you later...
