Are potential buyers put off by DPF removal?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm just about to start listing my Vrs on the various auto seller sites out there. Do you think the fact my car has a DPF removal will narrow my potential market? I've considered returning the car too standard or even not listing the modification. I'm not overly happy about the second idea as its not my style to mislead the buyer, but getting people to view is always the hardest part.

I'd be interested to hear people's thoughts. I must admit I can't find a Vrs on the net that is advised as modified or with DPF removal at the time of posting this..

Cheers.

Knowing that something had been removed from a standard spec would set alarm bells ringing for me - whether or not the DPF removal was done for the right reasons.

Putting it back as close to a standard spec as possible would be your best bet I think.

When you talk about DPF removal most buyers are going to glaze over and lose interest immediately.

Yes I thought this might be the issue. Mine never failed, but I wanted added performance and economy from the car after a very short time of ownership. Like you say, this will still be a turn off for a lot of people I'm sure, even though the modifications have been carrid out by a reputable tuner like Shark Performance.

I guess I've just got to bite the bullet and see how it goes. The car will be worth around the 6k mark, so I've got to weigh up spending lots of money getting it back to standard. However, without a viewing I'm never going to get a sale.

Food for thought..

Yes, I believe the majority of people will think its a bad thing to have it removed even if that is wrong. They will see its either defective, or been fiddled with, not that it's been fixed. Marketing has sadly made the DPF seem something good, not the waste of fuel and financial time bomb it really is. It's a hard thing, I'm considering how I would sell mine after it eventually needs it removing.

Sell it on here as people are more au fait with things like that.

I have to add that if someone was selling a car and they had done just a DPF delete it wouldnt put me off at all. I'd be less keen if they had remapped it for more power though, so it's a narrow line to walk.

No problems selling my Ex 07 plate PD Vrs TDi with the DPF removed, it completely transformed the car

Hi

I think if you backed it up with whoever did the dpf delete i.e. shark did the work, it would not put me off tbh...I had the dpf get full up and it has put me off buying another pd vrs especially if the mileage is starting to nudge over 80k

I would suggest try selling it without and if you have no takers then offer to add it back on?

Hope that helps

Thanks for the great responses. When people think of power, they think of thrash. Obviously the DPF removal does offer greater power, but the extra torque is the biggest gain from the the conversion. The car is far more drivable in this guise, I found the standard car tight and unresponsive at lower rpms and required driving harder, not what I was expecting after owning several 1.9 tdi Vag motors. I'm not sure what everyone else's pd averages but mine has averaged 50mpg over the last 3k according to the computer. It's I'd easily 6 or 7 mpg better than when standard.

I'm going to bite the bullet, I'm having the wheels refurbed and then I'll try listing it on here first.

Thanks again

Just explain it in easy to understand terms to anyone who queries it...........and remember that only those that don't know about it will query it in the first place.......

Don't even mention the DPF in the ad.

If the potential buyer has done their homework they'll know about the issues with the DPF in the PD170 and ask questions. At which point you can tell them it has been professioanlly removed.

If they read up on the issues they'll already know it's going to be better for them in the long run.

Knowing what I know now I'd value a PD vRS with it's DPF removed higher than one with its DPF still in place.

Last time I checked Shark charged around £450 to gut the DPF and code out the sensors. On a £6K car that's quite a percentage of it's value, equal to a cambelt and waterpump change.
