Wavetrac LSD finally here :) Review coming soon

Recommended Posts

I was between ordering a quaife or Peloquin, after reading lots of arguing about whats better Quaff vs Peloq and doing a bit of research I came across this. Some say its better than both but theres not many reviews, So i thought i would give it go any way. After talking to W8 performance(Rob...top bloke) on here and taking a upper cut to the wallet/a bit of a wait it landed all the way from USA to me. I dropped it off at a gearbox specialist today, so won't be long before its back in the car. :)

Has any one else got a Wavetrac LSD or drove one???

I have a wavetrac and can honestly say it is awesome. The slingshot effect out of corners as opposed to the spinning all the rubber off of the inside front wheel is epic.

Ooo, nice!

One day I might get mine made! Been waiting 5 months for them to be in stock. What year is your car? I assume pre-April 2004 so you got the 114mm one?

Mines an 02plate, not to sure what mm it was.

few different types of diff's I take it then, I thought it was same diff for all mk1's?

Yes and IMO there all the same using the same design just say they do things different lol

Had all 3 and all drive the exact same

Wavetrac for me now as rob gets them and he is a legend

Dont shoot me down for throwing my 2p in but i read that Wavetrac was the only lsd that is different on the market as far as internals go.

I know what ur saying thou, they all do the same thing'ish.

Taken from wavetrac site

1) If you lift a wheel, all gear diffs except Wavetrac®, will NOT power the other wheel.

2) During the transition from accel to decel, all gear diffs except Wavetrac®, do nothing.

Why does this happen?

All gear LSDs (including Torsen®, Truetrac®, Quaife®, Peloquin, OBX, etc.) work in basically the same manner: they divide the drive torque between the two axles, applying drive to each side, up to the available grip of each tire. The amount of drive torque one wheel can get over the other is described as the bias ratio, a measure of the torque split across the axle............bla bla bla

VAG changed the size of the final ring gear in the gearbox in March 2004 from 114mm to 113mm.

VW has made a suppression to the 02J 5-speed type transaxle. As of Vehicle production date March 01 2004 the stock differential ring gear diameter has been reduced from 114mm to 113mm to allow for a larger rivet.

My car was built April 2004.

Stamped on the top of my gearbox is EHA 15034 37 0686

EHA is the ratios

15/03/4 is manufacture date of the gearbox.

So I'm 95% convinced that I have a 113mm ring gear.

Have to get the right one :D

I spoke to a guy here in NZ who fits OBX diffs. He says they slways have to be machined to fit properly.

Yep, so its down to how cheaply the work can be done as whether worth giving one a go.

The diff + fixing kit is about £350 delivered to UK

All cars should have one.

You suggesting outlawing the open-diff ?

ie if you've got an open diff fitted to your car you should be basically be banned from the open road ?

a wavetrac is different in the way it applies traction even when one wheel is off the ground, unlike quaife and peloquin iirc, hence why the quaife in a rs focus has been called grabby when traction is reapplied after airtime.

I can't believe that they can/would make something up and sell it as such, if its not how they describe,as surely they would get caught out.....surely not a gimmic, but a feature that differentiates their product.

You really don't think a company would elaborate or jazz up their product in their own marketing, or suggest their product was innovative or groundbreaking when in fact it was similar to things already in the marketplace?
