I can't know everything and never aspire to :-)

Life is a lesson and things that sometime we think are done one way clearly are not.

Did you like that dig ;-) all banter but I liked that one

Going to have a proper google read up tonight to understand the exact way it works to be sure.

Anyways back to topic before we get into trouble over a lovers tiff !!

  • lol, no those were your words, you said it was the same design as fact! Again we can check with wavetrac if you like, especially as you are gonna be selling them, am sure they would want you to know h

VAG changed the size of the final ring gear in the gearbox in March 2004 from 114mm to 113mm. My car was built April 2004. Stamped on the top of my gearbox is EHA 15034 37 0686 EHA is the ratios

I also stand corrected about them not being same design but I also stand by they don't feel no different to me !! But I did drive like a fanny most of the time

Gonna order one and have a play with the bias plates as that sounds good to tweak to the species of the octy

A diff for the 02J (up to 2004), ARP bolts, installation kit and delivery is £930 all in.

If a few people want to get involved I may be able to get this closer to £900.

Thanks

Rob

Do you have a rough idea of fitting costs ?

As stated earlier in this thread any of the manufactures that supply LSD/ATB differential units are going to make a huge difference in our front wheel drive vehicles. And also as previously stated the differences in performance are minimal. I have had a wavetrac installed in my octy and the useable power that can now be transmitted to the road is phenomenal. Without being dangerous and grabby it's smooth and predictable. I should be interested to have a go in a similar specced octy with another manufacturers diff fitted for a back to back comparison. When I was researching this subject and asked my local touring car Team which one to go for Wavetrac was their reply.

Yes wavetrac says that there's is special but under inspection there is no difference in design and this was brought up by other manufactures lol

Gimic to sell IMO but there good and I will get another one soon

Since the other diff's was cheaper ill just pretend its true then lol :)

Or worse still, Strictly Pop Factor On Ice...

Lol that would be bad !!

Yeah atleast the servers lights have a good sequence if working right ha ha

You suggesting outlawing the open-diff ?

ie if you've got an open diff fitted to your car you should be basically be banned from the open road ?

Yep... Should be standard on any fwd cars over 150bhp

The diff works really well nice and smooth. its just scary when you light up both wheels in mid corner.

Just to back up Clive he recommended me the wavetrac diff over the others. Saying that Pete's car suited it really well. Also w8 had awesome customer service.

lol, just thought i should point out there is a difference, that is all

as said, none of us can know everything, but on paper the wavetrac does have features i would prefer if i had the choice. Problem is its usually quaife that comes up as a secondhand option!

Oh I was going to save this one. But can't resist !

Ive got to admit iam undecided to either go for a wavetec or quaife ?

Ive got to admit iam undecided to either go for a wavetec or quaife ?

The question should be Wavetrac or Peloquin

Quaife are an expensive version of OBX - need to fixed from start - poor gear teeth machining - folks have been complaining to Quaife about it for years and years.

99% of people won't notice any difference

I have driven and fitted most on the market and have driven all of them and no difference IMO

The reason for this is simple - in 99.9% of driving conditions the wavetrac operates just like a normal torsen.

The wavetrac is a torsen. Two sun gears surrounded by planetary gears

product_detailed_image_3604_3066.jpg

The difference is are the alleged friction plates between the sun gears (green items in above diagram).

According to wavetrac these, when getting no drive from the planetaries, engage locking the axle.

If I understood the technical debate correctly (this topic was discussed in depth on PH few yrs ago), if it really did this (locking the axle) the steering would become extremely heavy.

I seem to recall queries as to whether two plates of that size would be able to generate enough friction to lock the axle at all. Further to this wavetrac claim these friction plates don't wear. I know that had the plate diff folks in stitches.

To sum up - think the basic claims against wavetrac where/are that the friction plates just sit there doing feck all (the 'snake oil' if you will), leaving you with perfectly normal torsen.

Couple of point worth noting about wavetrac's in Octavia's (or any mk.4) - the mk.4 has it own locking diff system - EDL (done via the brakes), as well as MSR and ASR.

All of these driver aids effect the way the diff works, basically making its life easier. ie You're not getting the 'raw' feel of the diff.

Trying to determine how one diff feels against one in a different car is pointless imo.

If you really wanted to do a proper test between the the various diffs, you'd need to use the same car, ideally with all driver aids disabled.

I am happy to have a look at running a group buy or forum discount on these if a few people are interested.

Yes please Rob, even though I have an 02m box :)

Not a problem Charlie ;)
