Improving Citigo's standard sound system

Featured Replies

hi all,

this is my first post in over 2 years.

just ordered my citigo elegance 3dr and due to stock availability i had to settle for the standard elegance version, meaning i couldn't get the entertainment pack.

have you guys any experience of fixing a) tweeters in the A pillar and B) a subwoofer in the boot (nothing crazy, found an 8" enclosure that will serve me fine)?

found online that apparently you can get the A pillar's with the tweeter trim [http://www.upownersclub.co.uk/forum/citigo-ambition_topic3033.html], however, i'm still unsure how 'neat' it is to install them and also to install the subwoofer.

any help with the above would be greatly appreciated, if you guys knows of a good fitter in the Aberdeen area (Sco) i'd be very interested in getting the dails.

Sorry, i haven't got a clue, but enjoy your new car anyway.

Any car audio specialist will be able to sort it out and run the wires invisibly.

thanks both.

@rogerzilla: any idea of prices ranges for this kinda job? struggling to find anything online in Aberdeen, even as a reference would greatly help.

Unfortunately i found it REALLY expensive to have the stereo upgraded.

The problem it is very hard to get hold of genuine speaker adaptors / a dashboard facia to allow you to fit an aftermarket radio.

There is also no speaker cable in the rear doors / door pillars as standard and there is no connection on the radio to connect to a subwoofer / amplifier.

I eventually went to halfords and had them fit two upgraded front speakers.

I paid £25 for the speakers, £25 for the speakers to be installed and £10 for a set of none genuine VW speaker adaptors.

I wanted the rear speakers done too but this would have involved having the car taken apart and the horrendous cost of having the cables routed front to back of the car

Have a look at this post.....

hi mrjmiddleton, thank you for your expansion on your other previous posts. I will be getting a quote for this job in the next week or so and update you with Aberdeen prices. indeed, i've seen the post you mention and i'm terrified of the prospects, sadly i had to go for whatever stock was available and couldn't wait for a factory fitted entertainment pack.

have you found any noticeable improvments on the upgraded speakers or would you say that it's barely worth the expense?

thanks again.

Yes, upgrading the front speakers did improve the sound slightly, but I didn't get much of an improvement for my money.

My wife has just fitted a new JVC stereo to her car after her radio broke. The new radio only cost £40.and even with the standard KA speakers the sound quality is 100 times better than my upgraded citigo setup. It's a shame that you can't fit an aftermarket stereo to the citigo.

This facia replacement is shown on another post on this forum.

Easiest solution is just to place a "boombox" on the back seat - very quick, and great sound quality. :giggle:

dear all, I've just realised i've not done the honourable thing and followed up with my updates.

after this interesting stream of thoughts and suggestions I decided to bite the bullet and have done the following to my citigo:

-upgraded front speakers to a set of pioneers 2-way, 13cm was the best size for the citigo [http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Car/Speakers/Speakers-By-Size/TS-G1344R], cost 33 pounds

-installed an 8inch active subwoofer in the back [http://www.alpine-europe.com/p/Products/powered-subwoofer-boxes45/swe-815], cost 88 pounds

-labour £120 (two hours)

verdict: the best money i have ever spent in a car system.  the speakers are a substantial improvement on the original speakers, they are better at handling the frequencies of the factory stereo, and this translates into clearer sound that does not distort at neither low nor high listening levels.  the sub really brings the whole system to live, as it is expected from a sub.  i'm not a 'ghetto' blaster kinda guy and i like my music to be felt if i feel like it, without sounding like i'm about to clip the system or loose my hearing due to harshness.  the combo delivers sweet and balanced music, regardless of the style of music and volume level.  the sub has a remote so you can adjust the frequencies as your music changes, which is essential for a good listening session really.

in harsh truth this is a set-up that is most beneficial for driver and co-pilot, as there are no speakers at the back, but that said i personally don't have music with people at the back, unless it's my daughter who enjoys the 'tunes' as it is capable of delivering good background sound.

i'm attaching a photo of the boot, you can see that the sub takes away about 1/5th of the space, so consider this if your boot space is crucial.

thanks

8 inch sub in citigo

Looks like a nice elegant little solution to the problem. And your comments make you sound pretty happy with the results. Enjoy the sounds!

Here's a 'proper' upgrade to the citigo sound system.

It even has it's own PA system.

It's so well integrated you can hardly tell it's been modified. LoL!

RE the Fascia, Google led me straight back to Here

Or they are on on Ebay for quite a mark-up... Dear me, not even ordered one yet and I'm figuring out mods :giggle:

That makes two of us. That is to say, I've actually ordered one, but not received it yet. Still 6 weeks out.

I plan to do a complete sound transformation in my Citigo. Upgraded head unit, speakers cables, amps, sound proofing and a custom fibre glass molded subwoofer cabinet in the rear.
My goal is to upgrade the system without sacrificing space. I'm also aiming to hide all upgrades so It looks as stock as possible.

The plans are only just vaguely in my head at this stage. First I need my citigo, then before I start the build i'll be winter-insulating my garage.

A complete build-blog will be posted when I start the serious planning... sometime this fall/winter :)

You can buy the A pillar cover with the tweeter in for around £25.00

hey Owens, can you post the details of where to get the A pillar covers?

thanks for all other comments, i'd be keen to see the build-blog when it comes!

I'm just replacing one of my A pillar covers as I got a small mark on it when I fitted the boot lights. I will post the part numbers in the next few days as you can only buy them with the tweeter or without.

Hi Pozaicer, how did you attach the subwoofer to the headunit? I presume you are using original HU?

I noticed it only has outputs for the rear speakers, did you attach it to these?

I have a fascia for a headunit unit if anyone wants one. I was going to install my pioneer HU but would lose PID as it is charged/powered by a connector which plugs into original headunit, so had to use the original Headunit and just fit speakers which are wasted now as they dont sound as good as they should. (2x1000w 6x9's)

hi Stu,

indeed, it has the original HU, as i just wanted a decent upgrade and not a massive one ;-)

however, you can connect anything you like using the speakers line ( didn't do it myself as i needed a certificate of the workso if anything goes wrong it is covered).

have a look at this for some wiring ideas, this is from the sub i bought [http://www.alpine-europe.com/fileadmin/user_upload/manuals//car_audio_manuals/SWE-815/OM_SWE-815_EN.pdf].

what the engineer did say was that it is important to get your fuse right and considering a capacitor, depending on your listening preferences.

i hope it helps.
