Whistling wipers

Featured Replies

Ever since I replaced my wiper blades, they whistle when the blades are in the vertical position at the end of the stroke. This only happens over about 40 mph. I've tried refitting them, but still they whistle. It's not loud but its one of those noises that makes you go slowly mad because you know it's going to happen!

I have the same problem with a strange noise when the wipers park, it gets annoying when on intermittent auto wipe. I've a feeling it is something to do with the finish of the glass Lifeshine that was added. I am going to attempt to clean the wiper park area with some solvent and see if it cures it

That's chuffing clever! Do you recognise the tune?

Of course he does! He just missed out the punctuation - should have been

...they whistle "When the Blades are in the Vertical Position"...

It's an old Sheffield United drinking song.

Mine do the same. I put Bosch blades on my Yeti about a month ago and they also whistle only in the vertical position. 50mph here though.

The noise from my new roof bars drowns out the wiper whistle ;-)

If you can work out the edge that is causing the whistle, this should be fixable with a small piece of gaffer tape or electrical tape.

^^ more detail please....

Will have a look at mine later and take a picture.

Steady on! I don't think you're allowed to post those kind of pictures on here, I mean I'm not bothered - very liberal minded, 'live and let live' I say - but there are some quite uptight folk around here who wouldn't see the joke. Just a friendly warning you understand - don't mean to be offensive.

Bob, haven't you got a dingy to play with? :giggle:

It's not a chuffing dinghy, it's a keelboat (technically it's a yacht, but that sounds rather grand and pompous).

SWMBO says today is a gardening day - I'm just snatching brief moments away from mowing and planting duties. :(

It can't be "chuffing" as it doesn't have a steam engine, and as it has only got a sail it's a dingy (without the H)

Thankfully I'm at work so Sheila can't get me gardening!! And she only lets me use the lawnmower as I can't tell a weed from a flower.

That's what I said, "It's not a chuffing dinghy." Come on, get with it! (It does actually have a small electric motor.)

I am closely supervised in the garden, and only do what I'm allowed/ordered to.

Probably verging off-topic (well you use the Yeti to get to the marina) - but what type of keel boat?

Ignoring the radio 4 humour above.

I've looked at my wipers and cannot see anything the might cause a whistle. The obvious thing would be a sharp edge or a sharped edged gap, so possible that your new wipers fit slightly differently. If you can identify whats causing the whistle you just need to tape over the gap, or use tape to soften the edge of the step. Like this for illustrative purposes (red tape to show up):

This kind of keelboat, with a keel :giggle: . She's a 20 foot Broads boat, high gunter rig. And I'm on topic ... there's my Yeti in the picture too. She doesn't whistle or I'd have called her Roger.

Very nice - racing, cruising or both? Assume you use the beast to tow - must be close to to the max.

I don't tow her. I've only recently bought her. The hull weight is about 600kg, and the rig adds a fair bit more - I've no idea what the Yeti's limit is. That picture was taken on the day I took possession, the previous owner towed her to the yard for me behind a truck, and the trailer is his. Cruising mainly, with the occasional race for fun, but I'm not really a racer. I'm taking part in something called the "English Raid 2013" with her in August.

Towing limit for your Yeti is officially 2000kg, but safely somewhat below that. Personally I wouldn't go above around 1500kg.

(neatly back on topic!)

Corrected that for you, Graham - the topic is Whistling Wipers :giggle: .

(Sorry, just had an attack of pedantry. )

YOU RANG SIR

Well at least I brought it back to talking about Yeti's, not boats!

No apostrophe in Yetis please Graham ... pedantry seems to be the theme of the thread now!

I think the plural of Yeti is Yeti

Aha, now there's a point for debate ... could run and run!
