Tyre Wear

Featured Replies

My RS is almost 2 years old. Only do 7-8k miles a year and from day 1 the car veers towards the left if you left go of the wheel. Seen this in other Octys and VW's as well so no cause for concern and had the tracking done. However I am also concerned about excessive front tyre wear. Standard Dunlop sp sport2000's (205/55/16). Got the car serviced in the first year. Only 6k done and thread down only by 1mm on the fronts. At 11k almost a year later they were down to 4mm, and now 3 months later after doing only an additional 3k miles they are down to 1.5mm on the front. That's 2.5mm in 3k miles !!! Of course I do accelerate and brake hard. And I have had the ecu remapped, new exhaust system, induction kit etc.. done since the last service and do feel the wheels loose grip sometimes when I accelerate hard. So I suppose its down to my driving. But it looks like I will only see 15-16k miles out of the fronts. The backs by the way have 5mm left on them.

I got my front Dunlops down to less than 4mm in 10,000 miles.

However they were very evenly worn..

Which is nice....

Did i also mention that they're crap ? :D

I agree.

I checked the reviews on eiretyres.com and it looks like the best all round tyres for wear, grip and noise seem to be the Birgestone RE720 Potenzas. Seem to beat the Goodyear Eagle F1's much raved about in these forums.

Ok..here's one for ya..local tyre fitter who claims to have an impreza with 300bhp says he always fits H rated tyres as he reckons V rated and W rated wear way too quickly as they have softer compound. I wonder if there is any truth to this or if he is just trying to get me to buy his tires as he only has H in stock ?

Well H-rated tyres are rated up to 130mph so if you're not going to be going anywhere near that limit then they should be fine. However, if you have an accident and you're not using the tyre rating recommended by your handbook/manufacturer then your insurance company may not pay out. :)

  • 5 months later...

Just replaced the front tyres on my OCty 1.9 TDI Elegance at just under 19000 miles. This seems about average for the car. New fronts are Pirellis from Farmer auto, cost
