225/40/18 Continental Sport Contact 5

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I had to replace the front tyres on my Octy vRS after 2 nails in one tyre, and a damaged side wall on the other (no idea how that happened) which were Conti Sport Contact 3, but you can't get them too easily these days.

Anyway, changed them for Sport Contact 5 but....... the better rated one marked for Mercs.

£258 later and all is good. I've noticed less road noise as well.

Will try and keep you all up-to-date

Just replaced my Toyo T1-R tyres for these..the difference is massive..and much quieter

I'm really impressed with them. What I can't get my head round is why the same tyre, but not spec'd for Mercs is rated worse

I've just fitted four conti 5 also rated as merc fitment. Impressed so far with them. Get good reviews in tyre tests as well.

It's not, same tyre, just without the approval tax. (As far as I know anyway)

never tried the 5's personally but my dad thought the 3's were a much better tyre they also wore down a lot quicker than the 3's.

The 3's have better steering feel than the 5's but I've found the 5's wear rate is better in my experience.

Both have excellent grip levels especially in the wet.

The Merc mo conti 5 tyres are completely different to the standard conti 5, tread pattern is different and the side wall is thicker

The marking "MO" for Merc tyres denotes that it is an original fitment for that type of vehicle. The internal construction of the tyre is designed around the suspension set up and handling characteristics for the specific vehicle. The tread pattern is not different and there may be a difference in the sidewall thickness but the main difference is what I stated first!

Odd that the Merc tyre is £7 cheaper at Camskill

I'm struggling to understand why

Dont know how??

Working for a tyre supplier we get to see all tyres coming through on a daily basis so dont know why they are different, first I have heard of this?

Supply and demand Bryan I would have thought. They wont sell as many for Mercedes

Old thread I know - but I also know that these older threads do tend to be looked at :)

It's interesting you mention the "better rated one marked Mercedes".

Looking at the SC5 options:

Mercedes Fit: Rated B for wet stopping, E for economy

Audi Fit: Rated B for wet stopping, E for economy

Standard Fit: Rated A for wet stopping, E for economy

Could be argued that the "standard fit" tyres actually offer the better wet stopping, plus they haven't been designed for a particular make/model of car in mind.

Just food for thought.
