(VIDEO) Still looking for my vibration

Featured Replies

After my previous post I was told to rock the engine, and this was the only part I could see moving,

Not sure if that's normal movement or if it needs replacing

Click picture to play video (sorry about quality its not easy rocking a engine and trying to keep your phone still at the same time)

I've currently got a vibration and I've tried changing wheels about and the dog bone mount and had no luck, only 2 things left which I think it could be. Either engine mount or drive shaft and both will be pricey and a pain! What were ur symptoms? I get a wobble under load at about 50mph!

mines a vibration when pulling away doesn't seem to be there when af faster speeds, sometimes on idle it vibrates, but more noticeable when pulling away, checked my dog bone when I had my clutch changed and that seemed ok and the mechanic said it was fine, so im ruling that out for now,

Get ya, it does sound more like a engine mount, especially if you have already had work done on ur clutch. I might check my engine mount and see how it compares to your video!!

What's the milage on your car m8, think there's some vids on YouTube that shows how to check out the dog bone mount properly. They usually wear before the engine mounts

cars just gone over 90k.

I would try the dog bone mount first m8 at that milage. Not saying it would definitely be that but milage does seem low for engine mounts

we checked the dog bone mount when the clutched was fitted, didn't have barely any movement in it at all, not compared to the movement in the mount above.. not saying it isn't the dog bone, will deffo have another check of it when I can get the car up in the air,

I fitted an updated dog bone mount but the bush was to hard and caused similar symptoms so it came off! Just a thought the rubber might look ok but if its gone all hard then could be that still???

Sounds possible, did it make the mount in the video move like it does ? Dogbone mounts don't seem to expensive to replace, so might aswell get it done, its just the movement in the video I didn't think could be caused from the dogbone as I thought that was backwards and forwards movement, this was sideways. I could be wrong as I said I'm not a mechanic, just want this vibration to stop its driving me mad, also noticed it does it more full lock to the right pulling away if that sheds any light on anything

Hi pal, I checked my engine mounts against your video and they seem ok, i will try and upload later ive just got to try and get the video off my phone. Im leaning towards the drive shaft route which im not looking forward to. Might ask around for advise on costs involved!!

cheers mate, vibration has been getting slightly worse over the last few times, the mechanic checked my driveshafts when my clutch was changed, but more recently I have noticed my clutch pedal squeaks when it goes in and out, even in neutral, but it doesn't appear to be coming from the pedal itself as when the windows are shut I cant hear it, but as soon as I open the windows its there, even a slight tap on the pedal produces a squeaky noise, appears to be coming from the passenger front,

not sure how much driveshafts cost, but I was there when the mechanic put mine back on, and to be honest didn't seem that much to do, so if you get a fair garage I cant see the cost of fitting them being that much.. Well hopefully not anyway

from your vid you can see were the engine mount boilts used to sit ??

Have you have work done in the past ? as it looks like its slipped on the mount or was no put back in the same spot ???

Making it closers to somthing that it hits off now the mounts are showing there age ?

only work I have had done is, Clutch, new anti roll bar, timing belt, oil change and pick up pipe change, I only see the last half hour of when the clutch was put in, never see him at the top of the engine, and not sure if any of the other jobs would of involved that part,

You would think from the problems you are having it would be a clutch type problem, but you have had that done? Probably a silly question but did they change all of the parts when doing the clutch, my bro had his changed then few months later his release bearing failed!. I removed my wheels today and checked my driveshafts and the drivers side had a lot of movement so I believe that may be the one that needs changing :(

  • Author

didnt have the release bearing changed when I had my clutch done, was debating it, but would the release bearing make the steering feel funny when going over bumps and stuff aswell, deffo feels more bush related to me, just annoying now

No it shouldn't affect your steering sorry was just wondering if you had that done at the same time that's all!

  • Author

no worries, so many things have gone through my mind, doesnt help my garage doesnt seem interested in fault finding it, I have explained the problem, he even drive the car, and said there was nothing wrong, yet everyone thats been in my car or heard me pull away has said they have heard it, just a shame none of them was mechanics

I did the same I took a vw mechanic (apparently) out for a spin and he didn't have any idea. My keys were vibrating all over the place, almost felt like driving it into a wall to see if that would fix it! :(

  • Author

I know that feeling of just driving it into a wall, the annoying part is I am sure its something simple, its just finding it.. Just checked, my clutch kit came with a new release bearing too,

That does look like a lot of movement on that mount though, you'd be surprised how much the engine rocks back and forth as you go on / off the throttle especially when under load. You should not really be able to rock the engine back and forth by hand unless exerting a LOT of pressure.

  • Author

deffo hardly any pressure, was 1 handed while trying to juggle with my phone to record it. I took it to the same garage I mentioned earlier and he said that was normal.. deffo going to have to find a better garage.. does anyone know what the mounts called so I can phone a few garages in my lunch break tomorrow and get some quotes for swapping it over..

To me that movement is quick common.

If you check most l.8 t std mount movements they do move quite a bit.

To test you really need to car engine running and get someone to check movement as you engage clutch off and on.

Do same other side on engine mount and also bog done mount. You will be surprised the movement then.

check this as example(dam annoying backing sound though)

and this

I still think possible Dogbone as those mounts get soft over time and can cause hell of a movement. The vibration could be the play in it. If not changed and ruled out get that done first. It is cheapest.

Failing that at the culprit it would be hard to fault find to be exact, as could be number of things,

Other mounts / poorly fited clutch / flywheel unbalanced / release bearing worn etc

cheers mate, I agree about the backing of the 1st video, but its a great video, didn't realise the dogbone was so easy to replace, I do plan to go to stage 2 in the future, so would an ECS mount be a worthwhile upgrade, even if it doesnt solve my immediate problem, at least its one job off my list for more power

The ECS is just a std painted Dogbone mount with there bushes already fitted.

Yes you could buy it like that complete and then it is just a case of remove old one and replace, a much quicker route..

Or you could just get the bushes and strip your dogbone apart and install bushes. much cheaper and easy to do

did mine in less than 20 min.
