Cleaning Wheels

Featured Replies

How do you clean yours? Is it worth taking the wheel off completely and cleaning or do you use 'the toilet brush' method? Which is best?

I've just done mine... I snowfoamed them first, followed by a jetwash and then an application of bilberry wheel cleaner 1:9, let it soak then a careful clean with a good quality wheel brush with extra bilberry, then jetwash again. Then I took each wheel off, applied iron x jet washed and dried with a mf towel. I checked the wheel was totally clean, if not I used more bilberry on an mf cloth Next I applied anglewax bilberry wheel wax as per instructions, applied a light coating of copper grease to the hub centre when the wheel marries up and put it all back together at 120 nM!

So you physically took the wheel off?

Yep... Sad innit! It's the only way you can get to all of the wheel to wax it-the wax is supposed to last about 6 months so I'll do the same around September/October time when I rewax her ready for the winter. In the meantime it'll be the snowfoam/ jetwash/ bilberry wheel cleaner/ jetwash/ more bilberry/ gentle brush with more bilberry/ jetwash/ dry with mf towel routine. Sounds a lot, but if you do it as you clean the rest of the car it doesn't take that long. Others (who have been at this longer than me) say the secret is to keep them as clean as possible as the wheels take a right pounding with crud/brakedust etc. I used a trolly jack on the suspension rather than the skoda scissors jack with a axle stand for safety next to the jack in case. HTH

For my weekly wash I rinse, snow foam, rinse, wolfs-1NT, agitate with valet pro brush, rinse, shampoo with the rest of the car, rinse, dry with gtechniq c2 v3 and mf.

Ye', same works for me. Snow foam, Bilberry Wheel Cleaner and agitate with Wheel Woolies and Swissvax Style Brush, rinse, Bilt Hamber Autowheels if necessary, rinse, De-tar if necessary, rewash, thorough rinse, dry, and C2v3 to protect.

Rinse mine first then apply fleet cleaner neat, leave for 30 seconds. Wipe off with a microfibre cloth, rinse again and leave to dry naturally. Finally apply greased lightning

But once a month if not twice I take them off and the above process for the entire wheel

Bilberry, Blast off, Bilberry, work in.

Drive car forward so the wheel is upside down

Bilberry, work in, Blast off, done!

I know, and I like clean wheels on my car too, but I'm just surprised at the lengths some folks go to. Just wish I had the time to indulge in such professional cleaning antics.

It doesnt take long and if you keep them sealed and wash them regularly, you wont need to use cleaning products on your wheels at all..

.....The dirt and brake dust will wash off with soapy water and a hose pipe/pressure washer

Yeah, that's what I do...wash with soap and water and re-seal every third wash. Never had the need of a propriety cleaner.

I start by rinsing, bilberry applied and hosed off then washed using multiple brushes until all clean then rinsed. I do all four wheels then snowfoam the entire car (including the wheels) and start washing that.

Drive to Luigis hand car wash, eastern europeans apply some kind of wheel cleaning acid, vicious jet wash off, done.

So what's the best brush to buy? As my wheels are currently getting powdercoated so will be fresh, I will give them a few coats of poorboys wheel sealant or collinite as I have both of these.

Collinite is a good way but sealant is even better... Poorboys Wheel sealer is poor...literally..lol

What sealant would you recommend? So something easy to use, durable and won't break the bank:)

Ive been using three products:

Optimum Optiseal

Wolfs Body Wrap

Armorall Shield Wheel Sealer

Armor-All-Shield-729x486-e338486ef099df9e.jpg

All do a great job.

Optiseal is the best though!!

I reapply every month

Gtechniq C5 is epic! £18 but lasts for literally 12 months +
