ESTATE TAILGATE LOCKING

Featured Replies

I have a problem with tailgate locking on my 2002 1.9Tdi estate. The tailgate will not open when either the remote or the key is used to operate the cetral locking system. All the other doors operate correctly. I can only open it by pulling the manual release by the driver's seat, and this opens it if the central system is either locked or unlocked. I have checked 10amp fuse F31 for the tailgate locking motor and that is OK. Is it possible to test whether or not the Tailgate central locking motor itself is faulty as opposed to an ECU problem as the central locking seems to work properly other than for this.

When you operate the central locking are you getting any noise from the motor in the tailgate? If so, it is possible that the latch has bent slightly and the movement provided by the motor is insufficient to open but when you use the manual release it releases. If no noise there is an electrical problem. I'll post a piccy shortly of the latch.

The offending part is just to right of the large captive nut and should look like the photo.

Since first post and reply I have corrected one fault but the overall problem still remains. When I had removed the tailgate interior panel I found that one of the two wires to the tailgate micro switch between the number plate lights had broken away at the soldered connection. I re-soldered this and when I then operated the micro switch with the tailgate open the release mechanism worked and you could see it moving the activating lever shown in your photo. The central locking system and the microswitch and the manual release all then worked correctly.

In addition the front electric windows (Comfort Model) which had been a bit temperamental, both worked properly on allswitch positions.

I assumed that all was solved but two days later as I was driving I heard the clicking sound of the tailgate central locking device and the tailgate became unlatched. Since then the central locking will not undo the tailgate and the micro switch does not open it when the central locking is not locked. Also if the mechanical release is used it only releases a little way and the tailgate will not lift up. At one point when I had managed to get the tailgate open I was standing at the back of the car and the central locking suddenly operated the release motor as I stood there without me touching anything. In addition the windows have gone back to being temperamental again.

From what I have read on previous topics I suspect at least part of the [roblem might be a faulty CCU. I have been quoted a starting point of £90 to test the system by a Skoda dealer and £188 plus labour and vat for a CCU.

I am considering trying to fit a new CCU first myself instead of spending the £90 and seeing if that cures the problems. Are they difficult to fit and what procedures would I need to carry out, and how, to reprogramme system?

In addition, neither tailgate interior lights work although the bulbs are OK.

Sorry it's so long winded but I realise these problems can be complicated so I've put in all the info I can.

Cheers,

Skodaoldy
