HP Microserver - much cheapness again!

Featured Replies

I was thinking of upgrading my N40 for one, but I think I'll stick with the N40 for the lower power draw as I don't really need the extra clockspeed.

Now trying to find some cheap RAM for it, perhaps i am just being tight but DDR3 1333 seems very expensive at the moment!

£100 quid for 16gb is par for the course tbh.

I still can't quite get around to pushing the 'buy' button as I'm unsure as to what else I'll need to go with it!

As I want this primarily as an area for shared and raided storage with maybe some DLNA, will I need more RAM than the 2Gb it comes with?

Also, it appears to only offer Raid 0 and Raid 1 so presumably I would only need two additional hard drives to allow Raid 1 to work correctly? Any recommendations for (green?) type of drives and does this server allow the drives to spin down when not in use?

Would WHS 2011 offer any additional Raid configurations (and would I really need it?) so I could add some sort of redundancy for rebuilds in case of drive failure?

Shared storage is no problem.

DLNA depends on what your requirements are, what your streaming to etc. some DLNA implementations require the server to transcode on the fly - of course the CPU in the microserver isnt great so may struggle with 1080p/bluray stuff.

Regarding protection, yes its only raid1 "fake" raid. if you went down the WHS2011 route, there are many plugins that manage replication between drives and stuff like that.

Wow that looks smart!

Nice

awesome, thanks for the update

Yeah im definitely going to be all over the gen8 once they start cashback!

It's not cashback on the server, you just get a switch for free :(

As much as i love the idea and will certainly say nice blog Neo_VR about your Xeon one...i still prefer the larger than life models of server. There are plenty on Ebay at the moment coming from data centres which are being upgraded to VM Ware / MS Hyper V stock.....Either way its not bad for someone who is running something small at home.

Currently running a 1950 Dell poweredge but am going to change to a HP Server which is more eco friendly....:)

You run a rack mount poweredge at home?

I certainly do......except one thing.....It now spends most of its time off and unplugged ......but i mainly use it for testing....

Just be aware new GEN-8 does not take SATA HDD's, it uses the NHP format SATA drive and as far as I am aware these are physically a different size with different pinouts to standard SATA.

edit.

looks like NHP Sata is compatible with SATA.

I don't fancy your power bill, or the noise!

Nor does my missus.....

I used to run a 1u in the hallway of my student house. It was horribly loud and annoyed my house-mates. Which was nice.

I used to own a Dell poweredge 2650......now that thing was noisy. Only got rid of it about 6 months ago as it was sat there dormant and doing nothing.....also i think i still have an old cisco layer 2 switch sat somewhere in a box doing nothing......

Looks like the NHP drives have £++ attached to them!

Just to  bump this thread... ive just took the plunge to beef up my home server kit. with a Lenovo TS140

Its got a proper quad-core 3.2ghz Xeon in it... and until the end of this month  its £220 after cashback.. you can barely buy just the CPU for that!

http://www.ebuyer.com/623350-lenovo-thinkserver-ts140-4gb-xeon-e3-1225-v3-3-2ghz-tower-server-70a5000kuk

It cant take as many drives as the microserver, and ovb its bigger, but it makes zero noise, is many times more powerful and its actually more energy-efficient. I also believe it has a decent ILO capability without needing an adittional card.

My plan is to stuff it full of RAM (32g) and run esxi6 on it, then virtualize the WHS2011 instance on my microserver.

Anyone want to buy a N36l borg cube microserver? lol

Decent price but you seen the price of RAM for that?

Its going to cost you big time to up the RAM on that to 32gb lol.

Will cost just under £200 for 32gig. seen ECC kits go on ebay for about 160-170
