VR-s Problem Selecting first gear

Featured Replies

Hi, I had a quick search and couldn't find anything on the topic, but has anyone had issues with selecting first gear?

I drive up to a set of lights, or otherwise stop, go to select first and the gear level won't go in. It's like I'm trying to go into reverse without lifting up the collar, it just hits a 'brick wall'.

I have had to start off in second a couple of times to get moving (got to love stage 2 tune).

Got to work this morning and sure enough just sitting there in the car park it wouldn't select first. Tried going back into second then first, nope. Reverse then first, nope. Reverse, second then first, nope. Reverse, neutral, pause, first, nope - arrgh! Neutral, slight lift, first - nope :( Neutral, small wobble, very gently (worlds longest gear change), first - success!!! Bugger that every time I have to stop.

Any ideas - actual gearbox, selector cables need adjusting (just a guess)? Anyone had this issue? Any help greatly appreciated.

If resetting the gear linkage doesn't work it may be you Concentric Slave Cylinder, same problems with selecting first and reverse. It also used to creep forward with the clutch down in first.

Found the problem! Bit of a strange one, and that looks like it has been there for a little while, may be since new.

The flange on the flange nut holding the change mechanism wasn’t thick enough, so that when it was tightened up it would get to the end of the thread on the gearbox selector shaft and not actually tighten up on the top of the counter weight. Hence the counter weight was flopping around on the splines that hold it in place. Always thought the gear change was a bit loose.

With a bit of wear in the cables, splines and the bottom of the flange nut it was enough to prevent it from getting into first.

New flange nut and readjust the cables again and job done; and now I have a transformed gear change
