Rain-X - friend or foe?

Is it this stuff?

Durability is very poor indeed

Yes, that's it. Doesn't sound as though it will take me too long to use it up and get something better, then.

I use Rain X on the shower glass too. :giggle:

No it wont last

If you apply a rain repellant (Whatever product it is) that has good durability, then you wont need to clean the glass until you need to reapply the repellant

G5 or its better cousin, G1 will last many months and a bottle of 100ml...well over a year or even longer

For me...and others will have their preference as well...RainX does the job quite well but has no durability and causes smears on the front screen.

In, short, there are better products than RainX

Whatver you choose ..make sure the screen is totally clean and degreased with alcohol before application

Lasts a few weeks and its a 5 minute job at the end of a wash. No smears for me.

Will be trying Gtechniq stuff once its all gone though. :)

As I said, if it works for you, fine

I recently applied some Carpro CQuartz FlyBy 30 in preparation for my walking holiday in Austria and Slovenia

It went on well and appeared to bead well in the rain

BUT

From the start the wipers juddered and although the product held up well on the side windows, the windscreen water repellancy lasted about a day of driving in the rain

By the time I arrived back at Rotterdam..no repellancy at all...Thats rubbish

Back to G5 again

+1 for rain x. Have used the stuff for years and rain x anti fog for inside windows.

The outside treatment (or similar) is a must for me - I have tried LOADS of different treatments ranging in price and found them all much of a muchness but currently impressed with Wolfs Chemicals Glass sealant.......

Never was that impressed with the Rain-X anti Fog - I have found that it is far better to just clean it regularly......

HTH

Mixed views have tried it but has caused wipers to skid, also with the heated screen I tend to think it does increase the halo effect. I noticed in the handbook of my A5 is says not to use on windscreen at all.

Just my 2 pence worth... No one has mentioned using a glass cutting compound before applying their favoured product.. Personally I use a good cutting compound before applying any water repelling product, either RainX or Halfrauds own water repellent. It seems to work for me

Totally agree Richie - although I didn't use a full cutting compound, when I used to use Aquapel, I cleaned with AG Glass Polish (the light blue liquid) then another clean with AG Fast Glass - and this really did the trick. The durability of Aquapel was immense, in excess of 6-7 months and that was on a car doing close to 1000miles per week.

I say it was immense because I now use GTechniq - in particular G1 and that last even longer.

The key to the durability is the prep of the surface.

I had smearing issues with the wipers on RainX, so I'm trying Gtechniq G1. In fact I would be keen to hear people's experience of using the G4 glass cleaner prior to G1 application. I'm not sure if Im applying it correctly because it was a royal PITA to buff off the excess. I *just about* ended up with a smear-free windscreen before applying G1.

I applied G4 in small sections, cicular pattern, let it dry slightly, then buffed off with a cloth. Applied G1 the same way, removed excess by buffing with G2. Anyone able to comment on this?

That's exactly right.

Key to using G4 is to not use too much and as you said, use on a small area at a time, 1/4 screen at most, buff and then move on t next section. Use too much and let it fully dry and yes it's a pain in the derrière.

Cheers

Steve

Anyone heard of Aquapel? I've read very good things about it. People say it's far better than RainX

I've used aquapel for a while now. I've got no complaints and prefer it to

Rain X which is what I used before.

Thanks Chris/Steve, I'll buff the G4 off sooner next time. Definitely agree on the amount, I quickly found you don't need much for each section.

I've used both the RainX bottle stuff and the RainX spray cleaner/repellent 2-in-1. The spray is quick and convenient but the bottle stuff seems to last longer. Great for run off as soon as you hit 40mph in the rain, but both formats gave me quite bad wiper chatter and smearing (despite changing the blades). So far, no chatter with the Gtechniq.

How about a pure sealant on the windscreen - like Poorboys EX-P? Just a thought - I haven't tried it.
