Starting problem with Mk 1 VRS

Featured Replies

Hello, new to the site but need some advice.

My 53 reg Mk 1 VRS has always been slightly hesitant and jerky at times but over the year I have owned it I have got used to it. Recently it developed a starting problem that didn't seem to relate to temperature or anything.

Yesterday it finally decided to not start at all and after some research I have replaced the coolant temp sensor which unfortunately didn't help. No fault codes yet as I need to speak to my mechanic as the last time I took it to him there were no faults. In addition to not starting the oil warning light also comes on after turning over for a while but having checked the oil level it is a little low but well within the right area.

Does anyone have any ideas as I am worried it is going to cost a fortune to find the fault?

If it helps the car has done 85K miles and is regularly serviced.

Despite the above I absolutely love the car and want to get it back running the way it should.

Many thanks.

crank sensor id say

Hot start or cold start?

Need to scan it before you replace anymore parts ideally

Thanks for the replies. Hoping to get green flag to tow the car to the mechanics today as still won't start. Will let you know.

oil warning light = replace the pickup in the sump, otherwise you might have to factor in replacing the engine & turbo.

Green flag unable to tow as the towing eye is not in the car. Have establish that it is fuel pump related though. Hopefully the relay and not the pump.

409 relay under dash take out and open up and check little contact on it :-) take 10 mins

Relays and fuses all ok, my mechanic has just taken the fuel pump out and connected it to a battery and there is nothing. New pump delivered tomorrow. No fault codes showing up at all. Hopefully back on the road tomorrow night. Thanks for everyones help.

Easy job well done

Hello, New fuel pump fitted and ran like a dream until this morning when it lost all power and stopped after about 10 miles. Started up straight away afterwards and then ran fine until I reached my destination about 5 miles further on. Any ideas? Assume Air lock won't be a problem as the pump primes itself, crap in the tank? Hopefully it was just a glitch and will now run fine.

The Saga continues! Octavia is still not right. Regularly losing all power at random moments and then all of a sudden the power returns, usually helped by changing down a few gears. No Engine Management Light and I ma confident the fuel pump was fitted properly, any ideas?

Engine Management light has now come on but strangely the car ran better this morning than it has for months. Getting it plugged in today to check codes and will let everyone know what is wrong.

might be crap in the tank or water diesel even ? might be what killed the other pump

have you had it scanned?

what about coilpacks?

Waiting for my mechanic to return from holiday before getting it scanned. This morning the traction control light came on for about 5 minutes before going off, eml is still on all the time. Read somewhere that the MAF could cause this, is this possible? Coilpacks were replaced about 3 months ago so I would hope they are ok. The loss of power happened again today whilst driving at 70mph on a dual carriageway, kicked back into life at about 30mph. I am pretty sure that the loss of power tends to happen when the petrol is getting low (1/8th tank )so maybe it could do with a clean out? Once scanned I will let you know. Thanks.

My traction control light randomly came on and the car broke down not long after,it turn out to be the alternator producing enough volts.Have you checked the alternator/battery?

GAZ911, New battery was fitted about a month ago and at the time the Alternator was ok. I will get it checked if the scan doesn't make it any clearer. Thanks

Mechanic back from holiday and two codes came up, MAF and Lambda sensors. MAF has been cleaned and codes removed and so far haven't returned. Lets hope that is the end of the problems.

Towing eye is behind the drivers side section of bumper?  Just unclips.

So the joys of VRS ownership continue. New MAF fitted to the car and now a new Lambda sensor as well. All fault codes have been cleared and everything seemed fine for 24 hours. Driving to work today and all power went whilst doing 70 on a dual carriageway, after a couple of seconds all power returned but the traction control light came on. When my mechanic scanned the car prior to replacing the lambda sensor there was a fault relating to intermittent loss of boost but he was pretty sure this related to the lamdba. I am slowly getting to the point where the cost of running the car outweighs the joy of driving it in the odd moment when everything works! Any ideas as the EML light has not come back on. Thanks.
