boost pipe curiosity

Featured Replies

I am wanting to upgrade the standard boost pipe and have been in contact with a few companies to get one solid silicone pipe made up instead of thw top three.

However i have been thinking, i know alot of people just have the two bends in silicone and the centre pipe in stainless. Would the metal centre pipe in this case act as a heat sink/intercooler?

If so has anyone just used a small thin intercooler instead of the pipe? Or would this pick up too mich heat from the engine?

I am guessing too that the pancake pipe underneath also acts as a sort of intercooler, has anyone replaced this with an actual intercooler?

Last but not least if you use reducing silicone bends abd have a larger centre pipe in stainless would this allow the air to cool slightly as it has chance to expand or would you lose pressure?

Lot of questions i know its when I think too much about things.

i thought you were meant to use as little silicone piping as possible? thats why darkside do hard pipe kits?

Im kind of thinking the metal should cool the air. But why do so many companys make the one piece silicone?

Is that purely cosmetic?

surely the metal pipe allows heat out better than silicone and the shiny surface reflects heat away?

I was under the impression silicone was for looks and tougher than standard hoses. Are standard hoses easily collapsable under boost?

Metal or silicone probably makes no difference in terms of heat.

If the metal one can put heat out faster..... it can also take it in faster from the engine so balances it out.

Unless your running some crazy power the standard boost pipes are perfectly fine and changing them will do nothing for you other than potentially void your insurance and make the car harder to sell as it will look modified.

And a modified car also makes you think its been ragged all over.

I am looking to replace because the bayonets on the oem pipes have worn to a point where they pop off alot.

I have been quoted £60 just for the egr 90 degree pipe. Why spend that on one pipe when i can replace the whole lot for less?

I dont intend on selling car but if i did i there are plenty of people that will swap oem parts for modified ones. And as for insurance i doubt it will be voided when i already have stated a stage one remap, uprated brakes, strut brace, uprated clutch and more. Im sure they will be more than happy to take a bit more extra cash off me if any for new pipe as if it doesnt affect performance they dont charge any extra. But
