which clutch?

Featured Replies

Ok, i have a pd150 hybrid running 208bhp and 307ft/lbs. It was mapped for a standard clutch so the torque was kept relatively low. the standard clutch is showing no signs of slipping just yet but is on 122k so I'm looking into clutches for the near future. What sort of clutch would i be looking at if i choose to stay with this map, and what sort of price would i be looking at if i wanted to get the map tweaked for more power say 350 ish what sort of price would i be looking at? Would it be worth it?

also how much is it roughly to get a clutch fitted?

£900 for a helix orgnanic and single mass flywheel!

Wouldnt run a dmf at hybrid power!

Fitting wise £200-300

Is this if i were to go for the full potential of the turbo or at the power I'm at now?

My old hybrid Fab had very similar figures to yours at 206bhp & 330lbs/ft and ran very well on a Sachs Organic clutch with DMF. No slipping, no problems.

I can't help you on current pricing I'm afraid. If you'd be looking to up the power & torque in the future, Jase's suggestion might be a wise choice for the money and extra reliability that comes with that kit.

Maxxed out and possibly a bigger turbo again - helix paddle clutch and smf

Same turbo you have now turned up a bit - helix organic and smf

Map you have now - keep what you have until it goes pop! But when you need a clutch and flywheel there is no sense in putting a dual mass flywheel back in as they don't last! A new one lasted me 20k at a paltry 195bhp and 300lb-ft

I'm running similar power and will be going for a Helix clutch and DMF when I can afford it.

I'm just trying to work out what its going to cost to get that extra power and weighing up the options. Its looking like an extra 1k for the possible 10bhp and 40ft/lbs......

Going to need to put in some serious overtime!

So about 600 for clutch to stay as i am power wise and 1k plus the remap tweak to get the extra power?

It depends what you want from it.

I'm going for the Helix because I like to know everything on the car is capable of taking the power and a abuse no matter how I drive it, over engineered. If you want to know the clutch will do 100,000 miles and take whatever you throw at it then go for the full setup with SMF. On the other hand, if you just like the little extra poke for the odd quick moment of driving and dont give your car too harder time and enjoy the smooth quiet DMF, then opt for a clutch and DMF. Worth thinking though, either way it'll be near a £1000 as a new DMF isnt cheap. As for tweaking the map, if you go to the original mapper I'm sure they'll do you a deal for a small tweak.

Ive had both the helix and smf and the sachs and dmf!

I'd always go the smf route! Far superior

ok so im probably just going to keep the power I have and change the clutch when this one goes......... so ill be looking for a clutch that can handle 307ft/lbs. I don't drive it hard and never plant my foot under 2.5k ( got into a habit while looking after this standard one) can anyone point me in the right direction with a link to a suitable clutch to meet these requirements? be much appreciated :)

I dont think Helix do a clutch to work with a DMF

No point skimping on a clutch, you'd be better getting a totally stock clutch tbh or just not bothering.

Just a mention.

I LOVE the helix clutch I have and use it in my daily BUT .....

Have a go with one if possible as they are not for everyone, more noise and in stop start traffic its not the most relaxing drive lol. If you are someone who frets at random noises and vibrations stay away :D

If however you like a more "tuned" feel then buy, enjoy and never look back ;)

Agree with that for sure!

The helix does get very good reviews. I have a southbend clutch and silent smf which is really good :)

Probably open a can of worms but I have a techniclutch SMF and carbon Kevlar clutch plate with a uprated pressure plate I paid 500 quid for it and fitted myself, been in 18months and I'm very happy can hardly notice a difference to the original clutch and no chattering on idle either and I drive quite hard I would say, I have stage 2 hybrid custom map with around 200bhp and 350ftlbs still bites in the same place it started too. These come with no quibble 4 year warranty too but I haven't had to claim so I can't say much although before I parted with cash I hounded them with questions and phone calls and they were very helpful. cheers for all the info guys, much appreciated. hopefully ill still have quite a bit of time to plan what im going to do with regards to this clutch. the standard one is still holding strong at the min. which leads me to one last question.........

if a standard clutch with 122k on it can hold the 307ft/lbs just fine, and has been for what im told 15k miles do I really need an upgraded clutch?

Also worth giving Andy from CG motorsport a call because they do a special offer for Briskoda members on an 8 paddle clutch with SMF conversion and a slave cylinder all for £650 RRP £750, a few people run them on here I think and the results have been good, hold a look of torque too iirc.

Go for a organic clutch and SMF IMO, but certainly try to have a go in one before you decide....the rattle at idle isn't everyone's up of tea; I have the above set-up and can recommend it; at the lights people either look at the VRS and decide it's rough, or nod in approval as they "know" so to speak. I love it, adds to the appeal of being a bit different with an even rougher sounding BEAST :-)

Thing is you'll have very little low down grunt with 307ft/lbs!

Will feel rather flat and lacking in oomph!

The stock clutch is rubbish! I completely toasted my first one at 37k miles with a remapped fabia :o

This was my point earlier, if your driving round like miss daisy then stick whatever on and accept you'll need to be careful driving it. Clutch life will depend on how its driven and if its up to the job, if you like to put your foot down and enjoy the power a bit and fit a standard clutch it'll work yeah, but it might only do so for a year or two, which is when putting substandard parts into a car becomes uneconomical. If you want to enjoy its full potential then put a decent clutch on it.
