Loud rattling from engine and unsettled idle - 1.4 MPI

Featured Replies

My car has had the unsettled idle since ive bought it (i cant think of any other way to describe it) it seems smooth when driving but just feels "uneven" at idle.

Other problem is the rattling, someone said they thought it was the timing chain but the cars only on 70k miles so i wasnt sure, if it is this how much is it for replacement? if it isnt this, then what is it?!

Il get a video of the car making the sound so that you can hear it.

Thanks in advance! :)

Lumpy idle on an mpi is totally normal, rattle from the timing chain is also common, 120k is the stated interval on the chain so you've probably got quite a while to get used to it :)

I got the same car and the same noise,  got the timing chain done at 100k miles, and the idle went a little better, as the chain stretches and rattles. But as Avalon said it is pretty normal to have a lumpy idle, its when it cuts out you have a problem, and mine has never cut out yet, so i don't think you have a big problem :)

sickozero - when you say 'when it cuts out you have a problem' - Do you mean a problem with the timing chain? and therefore it needs changing or are you referring to another problem?

Mine has started to cut out....

Sounds like a timing chain problem. Had mine changed recently. Cost 30€ (part) + 80€ (labor in a backalley garage).

Basically, if your engine kind of sounds like it's a diesel, it's time to change the timing chain.

Once I changed mine I noticed:

-Quiterer all around

-Quicker and smoother acceleration
-Lower fuel consumption

Bumpy idle persisted though, but became less bumpy.

Mines done 60,000 and the chain rattles. I'm just living with it for now as the car runs fine except for the lumpy idle that they all have.

One thing I did notice is that after fitting a new battery, the idle improved quite a bit. Must have been the load the alternator was putting on the engine trying to keep a duff battery charged.
