Windows seem to be opening on their own

Featured Replies

I parked my car up today, luckily only 50 yards down the road while I was painting the outside of the house.

I happened to look down at it and noticed that the offside windows were half open. I know when I locked it I kept the lock button pressed so I could fold in the mirrors and I'm pretty sure the windows were closed when I walked away.

I was wondering whether it was feature in hot weather that opens the windows if the interior gets too hot (I hope not), so I phoned up my local Skoda dealer who said it was a feature whereby if you hold the lock button in the windows open slightly in case a dog etc is left in the car but it can be deactivated.I have tried to replicate this but for the life of me I can't .

Has anybody else experienced this? Do I have a fault? Is the dealer making things up?

I can't find any reference to this "feature" in the manual.

Sounds Jackanory to me.

Yes if you hold the lock button down the windows will CLOSE, not open. They open when the unlock button is held down.

Sounds like a glitch in the electrics to me.

Thanks Coops thats what I thought unless there is yet another feature on these cars that nobody knows about.

I`ll try another dealer tomorrow and see what they say.

Maybe you inadvertently pressed the open button when you were painting? It is easily done!

Where ALL the windows slightly open, or only some?

If all the windows were open, then you probably accidentally pushed the button. But if only some where open, then there must be some kind of malfunctioning.

From a distance I'm not sure if the near side windows were open I could only see the offside so using the key I closed them. I suppose I could have pressed the key button, it was in my pocket and I was up and down a ladder all day.

But now I'm just curious to know if what the dealer was saying is right that there is a function that opens the windows slightly with a long press of the lock button in case a dog or someone is left in the car. She said that this option can be turned on/off with, I presume, vcds.

No there is no function like this. There is one to open the windows and sunroof by holding in the lock button.

The lock button functions like this:

- Press/hold in once, car locks

- Keep holding or press and hold again, windows are closed and sunroof and sunroof blind closes (must be held down until windows/sunroof closed or else the closing stops)

- Release, and then press and hold again, mirrors fold in.

The same works in reverse, press the unlock button and the car will unlock.

Press and hold the unlock button, then all 4 windows will open and keep opening until you release the button, in the UK at least the function works both ways to lock and unlock.

Thats what I thought. So it would seem that either I have a fault or I did somehow inadvertently press the unlock button of the key in my pocket long enough to open the windows half way. I suppose I should have gone and checked whether the car was unlocked and I would have known for sure.

Checking the car is unlocked will not work, since it will relock itself if no door is opened in about 30 seconds. So, in effect the car will unlock, windows will go down and then the car will relock itself because no door is opened. So you'll have your car locked with the windows open.

Yes you`re right of course, I forgot about that

If a window senses resistance when closing then it will stop, as a safety measure. Maybe the window didn't actually close?

All VW group cars have the feature where pressing and holding the unlock button will drop the windows, though on some you can switch off the feature using the maxidot or equivalent (MFD). It is VERY easy to press and hold the button in your pocket. Done it myself a few times!

Plus:

Press/hold in once will fold the mirrors after 2 seconds if no windows are open.

Press once to lock and press again within 2 seconds disables the safe secure system (means you can open the doors from the inside even when the car is locked) - this also turns off the alarm interior monitor.

. N.

Is this the same as pressing the button on the bottom of the B pillar?

It's similar, but pressing the button on the B pillar deactivates the interior monitor and also deactivates the tow-away protection (useful on ferries) but as far as I'm aware the doors can't be opened from the inside.

My dad used to end up opening the windows on his Audi by accident with the key in his pocket, so he got the dealer to turn the function off. Not sure exactly how it happened, presumably other keys pressing the button.

Thanks fellas. I think I have my answer. Looks like I'll have to be more careful where I keep my keys
