Just been speaking to an indy VAG specialist.

 

When I described the problem he was initially surprised, saying that he'd never heard of on it a 2.0TD with the DOHC, only on the old 1.9TD (which were relatively notorious for it).

 

On explaining that the 4x4/Scout uses the 8v engine he recalled that they use the old 1.9 PD Cylinder Head (hence the SOHC rather than DOHC and the same cam chewing properties as the old 1.9D).

 

Currently awaiting a price for him to fix it; had an interesting offer for it as is; got a quote for a recon engine; and thinking of setting aside this years year-end bonus on PCPing my way into the three year cycle on a new 4x4 (which surprisingly requires a lot less up front capital than buying a decent used replacement tomorrow for example, though given that it wouldn't arrive until January still gives me a three month headache..........).

 

All whilst trying to do it as cheaply as possible in the interim.

 

Life would be boring if it was straightforward!

First time I've heard anyone suggest a 2.0 PD is more reliable than a 1.9 PD! The opposite is the prevailing view wherever I've read. As you alluded to above, I thought so long as the correct oil is used you should be able to get several hundred thousand miles out of an old 1.9 PD.

 

Although possibly I'm just thinking of older 1.9 and 2.0 PD engines than being discussed here...

I don't think he was suggesting more reliable, just the propensity for cam munching in isolation; setting aside the other well documented issues with the 2.0PD!

 

Google 'PD camshaft wear' and you'll get the picture, all about the 1.9PD........

also known the as the "Chocolate cam" problem  :rofl:  that mainly affected the vw golf mkiv 1.9 PD130 and 150 engines

Found a way out.

 

Fix car at Indy using non OEM parts and significantly reduced price, ignore the other new advisories. Drive till Jan/Feb then trade in at good price agreed today as part of deal for  0% PCP'd Octavia 3 4x4 which I've ordered, but don't start paying for till it arrives next year...........

 

Roll car over every three years, view as work expense, never be here again. Work even harder to ensure year end bonus pays for next years finance and all the things the family want!

 

Never thought I'd be buying a new car ever, let alone in circumstances like this, but having done the maths it's the least cash option now, and two turns of the wheel over 6 years on two in warranty vehicles, not much more than my total of cost ownership over the last six years on one car bought 'traditionally' and serviced by me.

 

What a weird week. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

Good choice on going for a new one, I only ever have new cars these days, you can just fill with fuel and check the oil and maybe a few tyres along the way and thats it, end of 3 years get rid before it goes out of warranty and any problems arise, I was like you, I got fed up with buying cars and forever worrying about failiures that could and did happen, I would rather spend a chunk each month and have the peace of mind rather than rolling the dice and getting hit with big bills, at least nowadays I can get in the car and go anywhere at any time and know that I will always get to where I am planning on going and more importantly always get home, even if the cars breaks down then its up to Skoda to sort me out and pay the bills !

 

Good choice of car and now its time for the waiting game!
