Satnav

Featured Replies

Am I correct in assuming that, like the latest VW Golf, the OE satnav doesn't accept 7figure postcodes?

If not, why not?

My Amundsen does accept seven digit post codes

I'd be lost if they don't.....

So even the base Amundsen takes 7 figures? Good old Skoda. A colleague has just obtained a Mk 7 Golf GTD with satnav as standard which doesn't. Curious.

I recently had a mk7 for a while and also couldn't get postcodes done correctly. I took it back at a weekend and was unable to check any others but was told they had been seen to work previously.

My Amundsen does accept seven digit post codes

I looked for post code input but couldn't spot it. Is a change required in Set Up?

Thanks

No change in setup, when you go in to search for an address there is a box lower down the screen for the post code option, hit that and away you go. Only thing I noticed, the couple of times I used the postcode so far it does not confirm the street name whereas the old Columbus used to so you knew you were definitely heading in the right direction!

Am I missing something here but aside from not having something stuck to the windscreen, are factory fit Nav systems that much better than my £150 TomTom? Need to be several times better IMHO..or is there something I've missed?

I'm of the same opinion, I don't have the need to change to a built in one with pay-for map updates and its not something I would waste money on, especially as they are so ludicrously expensive. My phone neatly sits in the popup box on top of the Octy dash.

Probably not in terms of the actual software, I had a Tom Tom before the Superb and it was a great little unit. I guess the benefit of a built in system is the lack of wires and no screen mounted suckers!

The Amundsen is good value on the Eleg as it is standard spec, I could not justify the £800 cost of upgrading to Columbus just to get the bigger screen. In addition to sat nav you also get all the trip computer functionality and other bits and bobs of info thrown in with the built in unit such as Drive Select Info, Climatronic, TMC messaging, etc. I still wish they would include speed camera info but I appreciate that on the continent that is against the law in some countries.

Basically, I'm in the camp of it's ok if it is fitted as standard but not worth paying the extra to upgrade unless you are a techno obsessive otherwise you are unlikely to get your moneys worth!

Sounds like my feeling - if its standard, then fair enough but I fail to see anything to make it worth paying the extra for? Call me old fashioned, but as long as the rest of the info is displayed somewhere, then I don't need it in fancy font elsewhere..

Perhaps I'm becoming a technophobe instead of the technophile I've been for years!

Not sure I've seen anything even in standard Elegance that drags me towards it over SE....given it appears you "don't need" a heated screen if you have a petrol engine, according to Skoda...hence you can't have one! Thats about the only option I'd be interested in and I'm not choosing a diesel JUST so I can have a heated screen option!

I must be honest you've probably got a good point there, I still spent £2K on extras but could have easily added double that with xenons, elec seats, sunroof, Columbus, etc... but then I would have been paying far too much for a car that's going to get battered on the M1 day in day out, so I did manage to reign myself in a little! I still think that the Eleg is pretty good value for money, taking into account the list of extra standard stuff over the FL Octy II Eleg that SWMBO drives, even allowing for the huge increase in list price and the alcantara seats just finish it off nicely for me as I came from a fully loaded Superb Eleg so I felt I wanted some luxuries for my first venture into private ownership after 10 years of company cars!

My must haves over standard Eleg spec were the parking sensors, spare wheel and the winter pack. 18" alloys and chrome were the nice to haves that I did include but the rest of the option list bit the dust apart from sill plates and the dealer threw in the front mud flaps and a full tank of fuel! I paid £21K which was £3K discount but had the advantage of no trade in this time. The VAG finance was also taken and quickly paid off with funds from my cheap mortgage deal at a cost of £9.48 for 6 days interest and I keep the deposit contribution and the free servicing deal too. :giggle::rofl:

Sorry, going a bit off topic now......back in the room....perhaps Skoda should have considered the same route as Renault, they do some cracking Tom Tom based built in sat nav systems that from what I have seen are quite reasonably priced, but the rest of their cars are rubbish!

The only "must have" for the next one is dual zone Climate, and you get that in the SE. I can't honestly see me going for an Elegance just for the MFSW, which is about the only other "really want" for me. If it turns out cheaper to have the Elegance (unlikely!) then all well and good; as I'm looking at the 1.4TSI with DSG, the vRS might pass me by completely..as I suspect the BIK value to be too high for the petrol and I'm not sure I'd be happy with a diesel (the devils fuel to my mind). Would like to be proved wrong though!

Good job everyone is different - otherwise we'd be all driving the same car.

I have just ordered the elegance, and it is the first car I have ever had with built in SatNav. I am sure it will not be as good as my tom tom, but it will keep the car tidier with no trailing cables and suction cups etc.

there are advantage over the SE, and again, if you drive a lot the MFSW is a must.

Crusie control is also so useful for a 35k a year driver as is the armrest.

This is all worth the extra 2K.

sorry if you dont agree.

I would love to have had the xenons again as I personally think they should be made a legal requirement but in this instance I could not afford the cost, or the time for a factory order.

I'm glad I started what became a "useful" discussion.

Frankly, I'm baffled by VW's refusal to make their satnav systems more useful than a cheap TomTom. Surely if they did, no one would buy a TT and put up with cables etc? Actually, I have rather a demon little Brodit bracket attached to the fascia between the right hand centre air vent and the top of the Bolero, together with a cable from the ciggy lighter socket below the handbrake attached to black plastic sticky pads with little tie wraps. The TT is in the perfect spot - better than the normal position for the built in satnav because your eye doesn't need to fall so much. Certainly no windscreen suckers for moi!

I'm still thinking of putting a Kenwood DNX521DAB in though. THAT takes 7 figure postcodes (on a 7" screen) with Bluetooth as standard.
