Correct oil or not?

Featured Replies

Hi, Couple of weeks back i changed the oil and filter, The oil i used was Halfords 5/30 fully synthetic 507 VW specific. Mate of mine at work said that the type of oil that is used on the PD engine is crucial, Is this oil ok. My car is on extended service intervals,, Just a bit concerned  , Thanks..

If it had VW 507.00 on the container you are safe.

This is the highest spec VAG diesel oil available.

As your Octavia doesn't have a DPF you would have been OK with VW 505.01 (fixed service intervals) or VW 506.01 (variable) but for the sake of a few extra quid I'd go for for 507 (low ash for DPF's) everytime.

Interesting guide here...

The perfect oil for your car.

And you can even get 5 litres of Quantum 507 for under £28 at TPS so not worth scrimping IMHO.

On a side note the guy at TPS said that the Quantum 10w40 is now suitable for DPF equipped cars, it now being low ash. However the label didn't mention this and still only quoted 505 spec, but he said lots of taxis use it on high milers to prevent oil consumption. I put this down to BS but anyone here got any opinions on this?

Potentially no BS there as it is a thicker oil so less likely to be pushed past worn piston rings and cylinder liners, so kept in the sump and not blown out of the exhaust.

Sorry, you misunderstand, it was the "suitable for DPF as it is now low ash" that I was calling as BS, I completely understand how it can reduce oil consumption.
