Elephant mod, how much steam/vapour is normal?

Featured Replies

Did the elephant mod yesterday and when I got home from work (where I did the mod teehee) it I could see the steam/vapour coming from under the car...is it normal? Il try and get a photo at some point

Yes I notice it on mine sometimes :)

Mine seemed to steam alot at first and then died down after abit unless I just dont pay attention. Also I moved my pipe. Where is yours running?

It runs down the back of the engine and cable tied to the front subframe as I tried to keep it away from the exhaust, it's only temp at the moment as its clear pipe and looks poop :D yours?

Moved mine to the front of the engine and havnt noticed a thing.

MIne does the same but I guess as it wasn't open to the atmosphere before the mod no-one will know what is normal and what isn't !

I would suggest that the volume of crap hasn't changed it is just going where it can be seen -

too true

After a long drive it will smoke abit. Same as if you have a long drive and then take the oil cap off. If the engine is hot enough it will smoke.

My old car used to steam, especially when it was cold.

Changed it to heat proof black pipe today (proper job) :D

Is silicone vacuum hose okay to use? 19mm ID, 3mm walls so 25mm OD. What size bung would I need? too many different threads saying varying sizes :) thanks

I used radiator hose. Different engines have difference sized vents. My 2L PD is different to my old 1.9 non PD and a 1.9 PD.

Mines a 1.9 PD.

Mines a 1.9 PD.

I would go and measure it, I have a 4x4 with a dpf and the ccv is different to the 2.0 pd fitted in the fwd cars. The shape and size are different.

Back to your original question silicone hose will probably be OK as long as it is away from anything hot.

So ultimately the best option is radiator hose?

Could someone point me in the direction of something cheap yet does the job for the hose

Side?

Radiator hose don't resist oil. Fuel hose is the best option. Even though it's not a big deal if it goes bad quickly.

I've measured both ends to be 19mm. So would this be ideal then?

I took mine apart to fit on my current car and I had to cut the hose. It looked fine inside and out even after being on my old car for probably four years.

Joel, with the bung on that listing it lists Outer diameter... What size did you go for?

25mm

Being silicone it stretches a little :)

I get a very small amount of steam, barely noticeable though. It's good to secure the pipe (at least 1m long) pointed behind the engine just beyond the bulkhead, that way when you're stopped at lights etc the vapour doesn't rise up through the engine bay, out of the top of the bonnet and into the interior through the scuttle panel, it smells a bit!

Thanks for info, didn't even see you had already out 25mm next to the eBay link you posted.

I'm going to message the seller see if they would sell me only 1 bung and 1 clip.

If your in no rush i have a spare one you can have for £2 to cover the postage and materials bud.

Should be able to get itnin the post next week sometime, just got to locate it lol.
