Decided to buy a spare wheel

Featured Replies

Been thinking about a proper spare whel for a while, if you get a decent puncture or rip in the tyre then a can of gunk is not going to help!

Simpsons Skoda mailed me today with spare wheel kit £149. Ordered :) as its in for first service on Saturday anyway.

Also gets me a jack which may tempt me to take the alloys off and clean em inside and out now and then, call it OCD!

Forgot to say, major factor is if you get a flat the can of gunk would probably make the tyre useless and need replacing.

So you need a new tyre and a new can of gunk for a basic puncture. Hmmmm £££££

Been considering this myself, but more down the 2nd hand route.

Surely that price, which does seem reasonable, doesn't include a tyre as well does it?

Steel wheel I presume?

Not at all. Always do the inside of mine too when I take a wheel/s off.

Need a jack first though!

Mail says tyre included. (Wheel, tyre and fitting kit)

Yeah bound to be steel.

Can take a picture on Saturday of it.

That's pretty good imo, and includes the jack and brace too?

Presumably you just bin the polystyrene 'bin' in the boot, and lob the wheel in its place?

Does it come with a a big bolt thing to lash it to the boot floor too I wonder

I don't know if Skoda have increased their prices but I paid £130 for the complete spare wheel kit which included the foam insert, jack and wheel brace last October from my dealer for exactly the reasons you're getting one. IIRC it's a 16 inch rim but has a higher profile tyre so retains the same rolling tyre radius. Some others I've seen have had 15 inch rims which is something you might want to check as these won't fit on the front of your blackline as they foul the calipers

Will check, they know its for a VRS hatch so shouldn't be an issue.

But now you've pointed it out will check as it won't be any use if it won't clear the brakes!

Nah. Just whizz the caliper off. You'll be ok. :sun:

Get yourself a proper trolley jack for changing/cleaning the wheels.

The scissor jack that comes with the spare wheel is OK for emergency's but from the comfort of your own driveway for the sake of £50 get yourself a proper trolley jack and pair of axel stands (fail safe).

I manage to clean the inside of my alloys by squeezing the sponge and my hand through the spokes!

I subscribe silver1011 advice for a trolley jack and couple axle stands. They make the difference when DIY.

Re. the spare wheel, why not going 2nd hand?

In these spring days, when almost everybody is exchanging winter tyres with summer ones, there are lots of them on the market.

Knowing how it will be messy and crowded to buy winter wheel next october/november, I planned in advance.

I found 4 Audi steel wheels with good (say at least 70/80%) winter tyres for a total of 130€ (less than the cost of just one wheel+tyre).

Bought the wheel and full kit a few weeks ago from DM Keith (Wakefield) - £124.67

Yeah I clean the back of mine every time I wash the car . You can get your hand through them easily enough.

Don't forget the torque wrench too so you can tighten them to 120nm, you can get one from lidl/aldi etc for around £20. Avoids trouble in the future.

Never tried the official Skoda tyre goo but Holt's Tyreweld (from Halfords or anywhere) is cheap (probably much cheaper than the Skoda stuff) so can be replaced easlily when it becomes outdated. It works and the tyre can, allegedly, be cleaned up and used again.

Cleaning inside Vrs alloys, not my idea but some other member posted previously about Asda plastic toilet brush, about 49p, all plastic so does'nt hurt lacquer etc and does a great job without removing wheels.

aim in the same boat going to look at a octavia estate tomorrow and i think its got a kit but would

like a spare wheel instead so i need the wheel and tools and jack wot will this cost i think the wheels are 15s

So did I but it was £46.81 (just checked invoice) :p But the Blackline folk didn't have the choice unfortunately for them  Mine was in the car for about 6 weeks until I got a brand new neptune to replace it with. Used the jack of death that Skoda supply and nearly had a complete disaster, on 2nd one now. Trolley jacks are not with me :(
