Best way to clean inlet manifold?

Featured Replies

Stripping down my engine ive found my inlet has 110,000 miles of crappy black sludge in it. Best way to clean it?

Ive removed the egr and fitted a catch tank so hopefully she'll breath abit better afterwards

25lb of blasting sand? ;)

Take it off!

A scraper and some grease / oil remover

With fire!!!

A large metal container full of petrol and/or ultrasound.

You're almost better off spending £35-£40 on eBay for a less soiled one.

engine case cleaner?

I usually mix a strong mixture of traffic film remover/truck degreaser in a bucket that is big enough to get the manifold in and leave it soaking over night then get scraping with something long enough to get in there.

it is a dirty mucky job however you try tho.

Most solvents will break the mess down, petrol or thinners etc but you will have to scrape with whatever you use.

could give Mr Muscle oven cleaner a go first as a cheapy solution

if the manifold is alloy ... avoid anything acidic / aggressive as they can cause a reaction

Why, the manifold cleaner solvent stuff they sell in the car places is more or less the same price and purposefully suited to the job !

Its what I used on mine at similar miles and it came out as clean as it needed to be after. Cost all of about, ooooooh £5

Plus the elephant mod will see it better afterwards anyway (never plan to remove mine again, something else will fail far before that is needed)

Doesn't the fire method carry a risk of distorting the flange(s)?

Wonderful. We used a very similar method to clean out Lambretta exhausts in the school engineering workshop. Blowing a bit of oxygen through helps no end.

Destroy flanges, how?

Destroy flanges, how?

not destroy .. distort

rapid heating / cooling warping the flanges? suppose it could be possible ??

Nar its fine, let it naturally cool and all is well.
