how long?

Featured Replies

Hi all im now getting a new engine for my fabia vrs, its in the workshop now wednesday 19th, now they have told me it wont be ready until 25th, ok i understand the weekend but how long does it take to change a engine, how long did yours take? just seems a long time, and ive been told they have never done a engine change on a vrs, o joy.

An entire engine change in less than a week?

Is that bad?

Sounds pretty good to me!

When mine was changed they had it for a week, had it from Saturday. Called me on the Friday saying it was done but they wanted to test it so I left it with them another week.

Realistically a week to 10 days is normal.

mine was done in three days...

A favour,

ask them exactly what they received from Skoda.

ie,

Is it a 'Brand New Engine', or is it a 'reconditioned engine, did it come with a new ECU or are they recoding the one that is in?

Find out from them and get it in writing, (A copy of a workshop work sheet should do, or an Invoice for your records.)

have you got New Plugs fitted,

and what else has been done?

Get the Service manual written up with the details of the Engine Change.

How old is your car

& how many miles, and what was the problem?

Hi george, right it a new engine, havent got a clue about ecu will find out today, and not sure about the plugs will sort that as well, car is 2yrs old 40000, and using to much oil.

Often worth just clearly asking, so that the answer is truthful from them

'New From the Engine Build line', is it CAVE spec or CTHE Spec,

& not 'Factory Rebuilt refurbished engine'.

.'New looking in a crate' does not necessarily mean new.

george

Dealers had mine for two weeks to change clutch pack and software, then dented and scratched it, so had it another two weeks while those were sorted. So a month for a clutch pack.

Be grateful they can do an engine in a week, I say ;-)

The job is less than 2 work days worth.

The problems are them messing around with cars dismantled and damage happening, parts and body work not treated properly, and laying around.

because of lack of care, attention and skills..

Its front off the car, everything dismantled, engine removed, parts swapped, all refitted, car bodywork refitted, road tested etc.

Parts ready and a vehicle in from a Monday and it should be out before the weekend.

If they do not have 3 days free for the technician/s to do the job start to finish with any parts required,

the job should not be started.

Been told a week to 10 days here if engine is changed and that includes delivery of engine.

Mine is in next week for a cylinder leak test as its started flashing check engine, rough running on three cylinders at times and epc light flashing.

Also getting lots of blue smoke from exhaust.

Car had been perfect up until now with no real oil issues.

A few of years ago my local Toyota dealer had my car for a full 2 weeks to carry out an engine change (under warranty) and managed to break my windscreen at the same time. Clowns!

steve.d,

have they checked the Coils and changed or at least checked the plugs.

Or is this just it being checked now?

Who is it going to for the checks?

hi George,

that's all been checked and software updated but car still has rough running through out rev range and chucks out a good bit blue smoke.

skoda want a leak check done on the cylinders so will see what happens from there.

its getting looked at by west end garage at halbeath who have been great.

It was a lifetime ago but here's my story:-

When I was on the shop floor ( apprentice technician ), one of my mates had reconditioned his Viva engine and several of us helped to install it one lunch hour. Starting at 'wash hands time' 12.55, we set to and fitted it, all pipes, exhaust etc. Fired up at 13.20 - no oil pressure!

Rude words said and one of us went to the 'stores' for new oil pump 'cos Brian had thought old pump would be OK.

We had engine out, sump off and engine back in just after 14.00.

I realize 21st century cars are more complex but, realistically, a couple of days should suffice giving a chance for a good road test.

Working for ford, I had a 2009 focus 1.8 which the customer had continued to drive after a water pump failure. Book time for replacement was just over 8hrs ! Only the ancillaries needed swapping over (alternator, a/c, flywheel, clutch and transmission) It was a two day turn around inc decent roadtest and recheck

Pictures here are pinched from other members threads on here as an example.

(without permission.)

It is not an 8 hour job on a 1.4 TSI with DSG.

But it is equally not a 5 day job with your car and body panels kicking about some workshop with a set of Fully Trained

or part trained Technicians doing your car as the first one they have done.

(one Scottish Member had their car sitting in bits for weeks with the engine dismantled while the MasterTech was off on Holiday, ill etc, and nobody knew how to put it back together, the Dealership said.)

hi all just a quick update, had a phone call wednesday to say everything was back in BUT, something to do with the fuel pump, they did not fit it properly and when starting up something went bang, well would you adam and eve it, they have to get a new part which will take a week, i dont believe them but i cant prove any different, so will have to wait till next tusday, i know one thing i will be checking the car over, as i know every part of the body of the car, so i will be looking very hard, im not a happy bunney.

Quick update on mine.......after 6working days of testing and checks skoda have decided it needs a new engine.

Last I heard from the techs was they were checking the pistons and bores so am guessing its failed that check too.

Just waiting on the engine arriving now though they have said end of week for getting it back.

Went to my dealers today and there was a vrs having a new engine fitted. They had the old engine out and putting all the bits on the new one (turbo, supercharger) To me the new engine looked new in a metal frame all the front of the vrs was off that was at 12 midday at 4:30 engine was in and they were putting the bumper back on. (it was a white vrs with black wheels black roof lookers skoda stockport)

Wonder if they ship cars to certain dealers to have the engine fitted ;) My white fab is having it done. Been in the garage a month now so OP times sound good in my eyes...
