"crack/click" sound from rear of car.

Featured Replies

Noticed something recently. Whenever i go over a bump that only comes into contact with one side of the car i head a loud sound from the rear of the car.

It seems to happen more at urban speeds from crawling up to about 40 mph.

Sometimes does it reversing out of the drive. There are certain roads i regularly drive down where it does it at the same points of the journey each time.

It doesn't seem to happen so much when i drive over bumps that affect both sides of the car, like speed humps for instance.

I have got out of the car and rocked the chassis around and can't replicate the sound, i have also checked the wheels and they seem pretty well stuck on.

Will take it to the dealers, but it seems to be something that only happens when the car is in motion, and not all the time, so i think it will be difficult to make happen on cue.

Wondered if any of you wise bods on her have any ideas where the sound could be emanating from?

there was a few instances a few years back of shipping blocks or something not being removed from suspension during PDI checks,(big bright orange bits of plastic if memory is correct from threads)

this caused a very firm suspension as reduced suspension travel and bangs going over bumps

have you checked nothing in spare wheel well loose, can of goo secure etc?

rear seats clipped back correctly and securely?

not left the kids in the boot ?(but they tend to make more noise once the battery runs out on phone / ipod) :giggle: ,

now if you said it was very quiet I would have asked if the left the kids (or SWMBO) at the last service station / stop :bandit:

Yeah, thanks for the reply, I have checked the spare wheel well, everything seems to be be secure in there. Seatbelts are ok as well. I don't have any kids so it's not them! I just can't locate where the noise is coming from, it's a mystery to me. I was convinced that it was from somewhere near the left wheel, but the other day i was driving in a storm and all the water sounded like it was coming from the rear left as well. When i moved my head to the side i realised that it was also coming from the rear right, but the seatback was muting my hearing in this direction!

So, i think it might be not be, specifically, from the back left. I would like to get someone to sit in the back and have a listen, but the vast majority of journeys i am the loan passenger.

I just can't begin to guess what it is, and i know that dealers are on tight schedules and it's the kind of thing that has to be experienced when driving, as that is the only time it does it.

So, i'm looking for suggestions what it could be so i can tell the dealer some possibilities, many thanks for your suggestions.

I notice you declined to incriminate SWMBO :)

do you not remember the car advert a few years ago with the bloke going crazy trying to find a squeak, only to find it was the womans earing, can't remember if it was a VW or Peugeot advert

wise man if she read the forum :)

I wouldn't dare incriminate SWMBO!

Yes, i remember that advert now you come to mention it, was a good one!

Check your passenger seatbelt if no passenger is present, it tends to clatter about against the plastic wall.

Cheers

here you go.

thats the one :)

Yes, i have 3 doors.

So, did you have a noise too? What happened when you took the car to the dealer?

Yes i have. Dealer adjusted the lock on the door and then was better, but now, after about 1000km the noise occurs more frequently than directly after adjustment.

That's interesting, thanks.

Took it to the dealers today "Farmers" in Leicester.

They took it out for a drive, and then tightened up the rear seat, the door and some trim, it seems to have sorted it out now

so which was ??

that's trouble with doing more than 1 thing at a time
