Engine Bay Strip

Featured Replies

I plan to paint my car.

I want to do a good job in engine bay too.

so I need to strip engine bay area.

is it possible to lower the engine, transmission, CV joints, steering and suspension as one piece?

when Skoda fabricated the car, did they put the body over engine, transmission, CV joints, steering and suspension?

I was reading the section on removing the engine in the Haynes manual at the weekend and that seemed to describe removing the engine downwards and out from under the front of the car. (I'm not planning anything as adventurous, I was just finding the engine mount locations.)

you can lift the 1300 engines out from the top if the driveshafts arent't in but it is tricky.. the others have to go out from underneath due to space restrictions on the gearbox mounting location...

sadly the the engine and subframe dont drop out in one assembly, the engine is not attached to the subframe in that way, it is bolted onto brackets on the chassis.

the thing i've found before when working on axle stands on the floor is that it is very difficult to get the car high enough to drop the engine out and slide it out from under the car, it's far easier to drop the engine and gearbox to the floor in one piece, then seperate the gearbox on the floor, then lift the engine out through the top of the engine bay on its own..

the most fiddly component to remove from the engine bay is the brake servo, i dont know about the left hand drive models but it is really tricky on the rhd models because you need to unbolt the brake linkage from inside the car

thank you for reply.

I understand the engine is too high to get it out from below on stands. But on elevator is possible?

and if yes, it's not clear if I can drop engine, gearbox, CV joints, wheel hubs and suspension as one unit.

I have these photos from Internet.

No it can't be done as one unit

Interesting reading. I will be removing the engine from mine in the near future. Following your method Tom of lowering the engine and gearbox and then separating them; I assume you then need an engine crane to lift the engine out? I'll be carrying out the work by myself.

When i removed my engine i lowered it onto a tyre and managed to pull it out from under the car. The car does have to be pretty high though

Probs work if you lowered the engine and gearbox onto some carpet or similar and drag them out as the car wouldnt have to be as high.

Strictly speaking you don't need a crane, but it far easier if you have one.. You could just get a piece of 4x2 a rope and a couple of hench mates to lift it out the old fashioned way

does anyone have a see-thru illustration of Felicia?

you know, that isometric drawing with body skin peeled off...

You mean like this?

yes, but more detailed.

I know there is one made by Czechs and you can see everything under the body skin.

such illustration is very helpful to make a strategy of replacing various parts, like in my case clearing the engine bay area.

I must admit I don't 'see' without it what is best to do for minimal work.

I have access to a 4-point car lift and I can raise the car 6 feet.

I have access also to a sturdy weight trolley.

I understand what you are looking for. Unfortunately I don't have such an image. I think with the tools that you have, you should manage okay. Nothing is too complicated on the Felicia and the best way to learn is to give it a go.
